A grant of $17,000 will allow La Grande's Cook Memorial Library to replace computers used by the public.
The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) announced the award on November 14, 2019. There are four separate funds under the OCF umbrella that made this grant possible - Jerome S. and Barbara Bischoff Library Sub-fund ($6,400), Robert W. Chandler Fund ($5,000), Keane Family Fund ($5,000), and Northeast Oregon Heritage Fund ($600).
"I'm very excited," said Library Director Kip Roberson, after learning of the announcement. "We should be able to place the order for the computers and software in December with a rollout to patrons in very early 2020. It is going to be 16 computers, which is our entire inventory of computers used by the public."
"Presently, the Library's computers are showing their age; so many had out of order signs on them that we finally made the decision to remove those from the floor," Roberson continued. "The new computers will feature Windows 10, a much faster processor, larger monitors, the Microsoft Office Suite of products, and improved security and privacy features," he said.
"This grant would not have been possible had the library staff not identified the need and the funding source," Roberson said. "The staff spent considerable time this past summer completing and submitting the grant application to the OCF and their hard work has definitely paid off! A big kudos to the staff!"
"Strong local libraries provide citizens with access to resources and information right in their own communities," Roberson said. "I'm pleased that these Oregon Community Foundation funds will help support the Cook Memorial Library, and provide library patrons even better services and programs."
Oregon Community Foundation puts donated money to work in Oregon - more than $100 million in grants and scholarships support Oregonians annually. Four nearly 45 years, OCF grantmaking, research, advocacy and community-advised solutions have helped individuals, families, businesses and organizations create charitable funds to improve lives for all Oregonians.
