Facilitating Civic Engagement with Pop-Up Programming<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=866&reset=1>
Presented by: Amy Holcomb and Christine Goertz

In late summer of 2016, Skokie (IL) Public Library created a Civic Lab--a mobile, pop-up initiative to increase public discussion and civic literacy among library patrons of all ages. In this webinar Christine Goertz and Amy Holcomb, two members of the Civic Lab team, will discuss the background of the Civic Lab, strategies in developing civic literacy opportunities across multiple departments, and the four types of pop-up events that make up the majority of Civic Lab appearances. Additionally, they will cover why civic engagement is inherent in library services as well as the lessons learned from three years of civic literacy programming.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:
* Be able to articulate and advocate for the role of the public library as a convener of civic engagement opportunities in the community
* Be able to identify strategies and topics for engaging patrons in thought-provoking ideas and dialogue beyond traditional programming
* Be able to identify and engage library staff at all levels in civic engagement initiatives across the library

This webinar will be of interest to: librarians, programming staff, information specialists, directors and assistant directors in public libraries

Eliminating Fines: A win-win for your library and community<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=873&reset=1>
Presented by: Beth Crist and Med DePriest

Libraries have traditionally charged overdue fines for three reasons: to generate revenue, to get materials back on time, and to teach responsibility. But what if all of these assumptions are wrong?

In this webinar, you will discover why these reasons are old fashioned, incorrect notions that create a barrier for many people. You will hear how eliminating fines can lead to an increase in library use and circulation, with no negative effects. Presenters will review the research and results from the growing number of libraries across the country that have ditched late fines and coaxed new and former users to their doors. They will discuss how to gather your libraries' data and patron stories to create advocacy tools. They will share talking points, tips, and an advocacy tool you can use to build a case to eliminate fines in your library. It's a win-win for your library and community!

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:
* Understand, and be able to explain to others, why the traditional notions about late fines and their effectiveness are incorrect
* Be well-equipped to gather their libraries' data and patron stories to create advocacy tools
* Feel inspired to advocate for ditching late fines at their libraries in order to provide more equitable service
This webinar will be of interest to: public library staff and directors and anyone interested in advocating for this policy change that welcomes more community members into public libraries.

Special note: This webinar is sponsored by the California State Library as part of the 2019/2020 Metrics grant.
