Pacific University Libraries started a group to investigate accessibility in 2019. We want to share our experiences from our first year of accessibility work on library facilities, services, systems, and collections. We used our varied experience in collections, student success, and systems to progress with limited resources, time, and accessibility expertise. Our first year was spent getting an overview of all the accessibility regulations and best practices in order to figure out what would be appropriate for our institution. We hope to share our successes and failures so that other small libraries can start their own accessibility work.

Rachel Arkoosh is the Collections Librarian at Pacific University. She oversees the physical and electronic collections of the Pacific University Libraries. Josie Ragolia is the Student Success Librarian at Pacific University. She is in charge of the circulation, interlibrary loan, and tutoring services at both Forest Grove and Hillsboro campuses. Laura Baird is the Systems & Applications Librarian at Pacific University. She administers the library systems and digital platforms.

Pacific University enrolls about 4,000 students with locations in Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Eugene, and Woodburn, Ore., including a liberal arts undergraduate program and graduate professional schools.

Engaging Users through Accessible and Pedagogical Guides, presented by Bronwen Maxson, University of Oregon

Online library research guides are often created as a pathfinder with too much text but not enough pedagogical guidance, and a static lists of links that lack context. Pedagogical-style guides can increase engagement and retention of learned information literacy skills through more engaging research guides. Building on studies carried out at IUPUI (formerly, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), the presenter will share how the UO Libraries is using process-driven guides with infographics and other multimedia to communicate that research involves multiple interrelated steps and takes time to carry out. The presenter will share ways to make the guides more inviting and accessible through video with captions, graphics with accessibility features that go beyond the alt text field in image descriptions, an intuitive navigational layout, and adding a personal message. Attendees will learn how accessible and engaging guides can support diversity, equity, and inclusion and support learner success.

Bronwen Maxson joined the University of Oregon Libraries in April 2019. As the Undergraduate Engagement Librarian, she provides leadership and collaboration with campus programs and partners to promote undergraduate learning and research. Bronwen is also the Subject Specialist for Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies. Her professional interests include information literacy, the scholarship of teaching and learning, creating digital learning objects, and promoting inclusivity through scholarship and outreach.
