Oregon Reference Summit:
Save the Date & Call for Proposals

Join us for Oregon's only conference devoted exclusively to reference work!

The 3rd annual Oregon Reference Summit (OrRS) will be held on Friday, May 29, 2020 at Lane Community College in Eugene. The Oregon Reference Summit is a one-day conference with reference-focused content appropriate for all skill levels, library types, and experiences. It is an excellent opportunity to meet reference staff from around the state face-to-face and exchange ideas.

The OrRS planning committee invites you to submit proposals for 45 minute sessions, 80 minute sessions, and 10 minute lightning talks. Nontraditional librarians, library support staff, and first time presenters are encouraged to submit! Register for Free Oregon Edge Workshops!

Public libraries are invited to participate in upcoming, in-person Edge Workshops supported by the State Library of Oregon's statewide Edge Subscription. Join us for one or both of these workshops on Saturday, May 2nd at the Deschutes Public Library (main branch) in Bend, OR:  the Assessment Building Blocks Workshop and the Insights to Action Workshop. Both workshops are free and lunch will be provided for those who attend both workshops.

Please note: these workshops are NOT part of the OLA conference and require that you register separately (see below).

Assessment Building Blocks Workshop, Saturday, May 2, 9am - 12pm
The Workshop provides support to libraries that have not yet completed the Edge 2.0 Assessment. Instruction provided will assist you in completing your Edge Assessment, including support in answering specific questions, identifying answers from your library and considering your library's current digital inclusion activities.

Insights to Action Workshop, Saturday, May 2, 1pm - 5pm

Learn how to use your new Edge custom comparison reports to develop S.M.A.R.T. goals and Action Plans.

The State Library of Oregon is hitting the road soon with the Oregon Cultural Trust

This series of "conversations" around Oregon are informal information sessions that will help grant seekers learn more about funding programs, and will provide an opportunity to discuss potential projects and programming directly with foundations and funding agencies. Grants officers from the Cultural Trust, Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities, Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, as well as the Oregon Community Foundation, the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, Travel Oregon, and Oregon Parks and Recreation will also be there to talk with you!
Bonus!: Travel Oregon is also sponsoring a 3-hour grant writing workshop at three stops along the tour (Coos Bay, Pendleton, and Bend). All events are free, but you must register ahead of time for the workshops - follow one of the links below).

Government Information and Library Services

Tribal Cultural Inventory Report

The Government Information and Library Services division of the State Library recently submitted a brief report outlining archaeological, historic or archival materials "directly associated with persons/places significant to Oregon's federally recognized Tribes' historic experience and/or contemporary identity."

The report was a response to Executive Order No. 17-12, signed by Governor Kate Brown in 2017, and the directives of the Tribal Cultural Items Task Force. All state agencies were asked to report.

While the State Library does not, at present, have objects directly associated with the Tribes, the library does have extensive holdings of books, newspapers, maps and state and federal government publications that would greatly aid in historical and cultural research on the Tribes.

This includes tribal newspapers and reports, state agency Government to Government<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=8ebe285592&e=0d2401e925> reports, and a small trove of materials from the Chemawa Indian School,

2020 "Short" Legislative Session

The 2020 session convened on Monday, February 3 and given the constitutional 35 day limit, keeping on top of legislative activity is crucial.

The Oregon Legislative Information System (OLIS<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=1deecbfdcc&e=0d2401e925>) is indispensable in locating and monitoring bills of particular interest.

The progress of bills through committees can be "tracked" via the e-Subscribe<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=101d841855&e=0d2401e925> service. You can use the service to be prepared to submit testimony on a bill via a public hearing. You'll be notified of upcoming committee meetings well ahead of time through the service.  Live video feeds of committee meetings are also available.

Particularly useful is the easy access to testimony presented by interested parties in support or opposition to a bill as well as session publications.  Member votes in committee can also be found.
