Title: Serving LGBTQIA+ Youth in Your Library

Overview:
Dr. Robert Bittner presents a workshop focusing on library services and materials for LGBTQIA+ youth, children, and families. The session examines shifting terminology around gender and sexuality, reviews the evolution of LGBTQIA+ materials for children and teens (and their families) from the early days (1960's) to current publications, and explores areas of positive practices to ensure LGBTQIA+ young people and their families feel welcomed and included. Additionally, Dr. Bittner explores common practices that have been debated over the last few decades, such as labeling of books with queer representation or creating LGBTQIA+ sections within YA collections, exploring the positive and negative repercussions.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  *   Apply knowledge of shifting terminology around gender and sexuality
  *   Assess library collections for LGBTQIA+ representation and use online and print resources to help grow collections and personal knowledge of existing materials.
  *   Evaluate current practices in their libraries and schools and engage in positive practices to help ensure that LGBTQIA+ young people and their families feel welcomed and included.
