Hi folks,

Please see the job announcement below. It's a great opportunity to work with a passionate & talented staff, a very active Friends of the Library group, a supportive community, and a fantastic library facility. I am more than happy to discuss the position further with anyone who's interested.

And, for those of you wondering, yes, this is my current position. But no, you aren't quite rid of me yet! On August 31, I'll begin as the new Program Manager for Library Support & Development Services at the State Library, so I'll still be around to haunt y'all!

Cheers!

About the Position:
The Director of Library Services utilizes their judgment and professional expertise to plan and direct public library services in Crook County. They work extensively with staff, volunteers, the Crook County Court (AKA Board of Commissioners), the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Crook County Library, and others in and outside the county to ensure that the library continually evolves to meet community needs.

About the Community:
Crook County’s central location within Oregon gives ample access to many of the state’s natural wonders including the Ochoco National Forest, Crook River National Grassland, Cascade Mountains, Oregon Badlands, Smith Rock, and the Crooked and Deschutes Rivers. Prineville, the County’s largest town of about 10,000 residents, offers a welcoming small town environment while only being 40 minutes away from Bend, Oregon’s most populous city east of the Cascades. Other Crook County communities include the ranching and agriculture towns of Paulina, Post, and Powell Butte. Being in the high desert, the county boasts an enviable climate, with warm summers, mildly cool winters, and only 10.5 inches of annual precipitation.

Thanks to the climate and natural amenities, the county’s over 24,000 residents are able to enjoy a variety of pursuits throughout Central Oregon including hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, snow sports, a robust craft brewery and distillery scene, live music and performing arts, rockhounding, and much more. Diverse businesses and employers support the county’s economy, including the traditional industries of livestock, agriculture, forest products, and manufacturing as well as the new and growing industries of recreation, solar energy, health care, and data centers, including facilities for Facebook and Apple. The region’s vibrant economy and other amenities help make Crook County one of the nation’s fastest growing counties.

About the Library:
Crook County Library strives to help every County resident experience the joys of learning and discovery. Community needs and interests are front-and-center to everything the library does. Its 13 employees are encouraged to provide library services inside and outside the building, both on their own and in partnership with other local organizations. In addition to providing over 100,000 physical and digital items for checkout, the library offers countywide outreach and a wide variety of programming year-round, including an award-winning Summer Reading Program. Given the library’s small staff and team-centered approach, staff are integral in driving the library’s services, policies, and strategic direction, together with the patrons, the library’s five-member Board of Trustees, and the County Court (AKA Board of Commissioners). The library seeks continual growth and improvement and thus encourages staff to actively participate in local community organizations as well as the Oregon Library Association and other professional groups.

The 17,430 sq. ft. library facility, designed by noted library architect Richard Turi, was constructed in 1999 and offers a spectacular view of the rimrocks, a comfortable gathering place for patrons, and a short walk to downtown Prineville. In addition to its own materials, Crook County Library has access to materials from the libraries in neighboring Deschutes and Jefferson Counties thanks to a resource-sharing network serving over 250,000 Central Oregon residents. Each month, Crook County Library patrons visit the library over 10,000 times and check out over 14,000 items. As a county department, the library’s $1.2 million annual operating budget comes from the County’s general fund, with significant additional financial support from an active and supportive Friends of the Library as well as generous grants and donations.
