Hi all, 

The Los Angeles Public Library wanted to let everyone know about an upcoming Spanish language program conversation series that will begin this week on Wednesday, July 22nd at 11 am. We hope that with this series our patrons and communities will be given resources and information on how to address anti-Blackness and colorism to begin having anti-racist conversations/discussions in Spanish with their families/friends/children/etc. These programs will be Live on LAPL's Youtube and Facebook pages. No registration is required. 

Below are the program details and description in Spanish, followed by the English translations. As a reminder all these programs will be in Spanish:

Seis conversaciones sobre anti-negrura, colorismo, y antirracismo

1. 22 julio, 11:00 a.m. - Racismo Internalizado y Tejidos De Resistencias Antirracistas

·  En esta charla hablaremos un poco sobre las formas en que opera el racismo internalizado así como la lectura que se hace de nuestros cuerpos, dependiendo el contexto racial en donde estemos. En este sentido, en esta conversación queremos exponer las complejidades de internalizar una opresión, pero al mismo tiempo, aquellos puentes que nos ayudan a espejear y a construir resistencias ante la opresión.

2. 29 julio, 11:00 a.m. - ¿Y tú, qué vas a marcar para el Censo 2020?: ¿Origen hispano? ¿Raza o color? La forma en que tú contestes esta pregunta para el censo 2020 nos ayudará combatir la discriminación racial institucional

·  Para avanzar la justicia social tenemos que entender que la raza o el color es un estatus social que nunca debe de ser vinculada a nacionalidad. La raza o el color no es equivalente con el origen hispano, la cultura, la lengua, el grupo étnico, la nacionalidad, la ciudadanía, la geografía, el linaje de antepasados o familiares, la genética o ADN.   Yo propongo que la raza o el color se puede entender mejor como lo que yo llamo “street race” o la raza o el color que otras personas que no lo conozca automáticamente le atribuye a usted al mirar su color y sus facciones físicas.

3. 5 agosto, 11:00 a.m. - Programa para niños sobre cómo abordar sentimientos y promover conversaciones antirracistas

·  Acompaña a Esperanza Mendez para un cuento y discusión sobre el racismo y como nos hace sentir. Juntos vamos a leer el libro Todos Los Colores de Nuestra Piel, escrito por Katie Kissinger. Vamos a platicar sobre la magia de nuestras diferencias y por qué son importantes. Habrá tiempo para preguntas y respuestas.

4. 12 agosto, 11:00 a.m. - Criando seres humanos antiracistas

·  Este taller para padres ofrecerá información, orientación, herramientas y recursos para comenzar discusiones en familia de una forma valerosa contra el racismo. Discutiremos el colorismo y exploraremos cómo nosotros, como padres y cuidadores, podemos aprender a presentarnos ante la justicia racial interrumpiendo los ciclos de racismo dentro de nuestra cultura.

5. 19 agosto, 11:00 a.m. - Antirracismo, anti-negrura y colorismo: Recursos para adultos y jóvenes en cómo combatir el racismo desde las comunidades Latinx

·  El antirracismo y el racismo no siempre son dos fenómenos separados y mutuamente excluyentes. Conversaremos de los distintos recursos, blogs, agencias y grupos comunitarios que están combatiendo el racismo en Estados Unidos y en nuestras comunidades Latinx. 

·  Presentadora: Dra. Maritza Quiñones Rivera

6. 26 agosto, 11:00 a.m. - ¿Somos racistas?:Experiencias, reflexiones y acción para combatir el racismo y la discriminación

·  ¿Somos racistas? Una pregunta tan evidente nos incomoda y estamos preparados a responder con un NO rotundo. Siempre son los otros los racistas. En esta plática, estaremos conversando sobre cómo comenzar a desmantelar los múltiples aspectos del complejo sistema del racismo.

Six conversations on Anti-Blackness, Colorism, and Anti-Racism

1. July 22, 11:00 a.m. - Internalized Racism and Anti-Racist Resistance Tools

·  This conversation will shed light on the ways in which internalized racism operates, such as how we see ourselves represented in literature. In this conversation we want to expose the complexities of internalizing oppression, but at the same time, explain the bridges that help us to mirror and build resistance to oppression.

·  Presenters: Dr.Nancy López and Dr. Gisela Carlos Fregoso  

2. July 29, 11:00 a.m. - And you, what are you going to respond for the 2020 Census?: Hispanic origin? Race or color? How you answer this question for the 2020 Census will help us combat institutional racial discrimination

·  To advance social justice we have to understand that race or color is a social status that should never be linked to nationality. Race or color is not equivalent with Hispanic origin, culture, language, ethnic group, nationality, citizenship, geography, ancestor or family lineage, genetics, or DNA. I propose that race or color can best be understood as what I call “street race” or race or color that other people who do not know you automatically attribute to you when looking at your color and physical features.

3. August 5, 11:00 a.m. - Children's program on how to address feelings and promote anti-racist conversations

·  Join Esperanza Mendez for a story and discussion about racism and how it makes us feel. Together we are going to read the book All Colors of Our Skin, written by Katie Kissinger. We are going to talk about the magic of our differences and why they are important. There will be time for questions and answers.

·  Presenter: Esperanza Mendez  

4. August 12, 11:00 a.m. - Raising anti-racist human beings

·  This parent workshop will provide information, guidance, tools, and resources to start courageous family discussions against racism. We will discuss colorism and explore how we, as parents and caregivers, can learn to stand up to racial justice by interrupting the cycles of racism within our culture.

·  Presenter: Leslie Priscilla Arreola-Hillenbrand

5. August 19, 11:00 a.m. - Anti-racism, Anti-blackness and Colorism: Resources for adults and youth on how to combat racism in Latinx communities

·  Anti-racism and racism are not always two separate and mutually exclusive phenomena. We will talk about the different resources, blogs, agencies and community groups that are fighting racism in the United States and in our Latinx communities.

·  Presenter: Dr. Maritza Quiñones Rivera

6. August 26, 11:00 a.m. - Are we racists?: Experiences, reflections and action to combat racism and discrimination

·  Are we racists? Such an obvious question bothers us and we are ready to answer with a resounding NO. The others are always the racists. In this talk we will discuss how to start dismantling the multiple aspects of the complex system of racism.

·  Presenter: Dr. Maritza Quiñones Rivera
