WEB – Sources for Virtual Backgrounds

Have you ever been in a virtual meeting, like a Zoom call, and someone has an amazing background image? It can look really cool!

Did you know that you can add a virtual background to many calling/conferencing platforms now including:

·     Zoom
·     Microsoft Team meetings
·     Skype calls
·     WebEx meetings
·     Google Meet (with a 3rd party app)

So if you want to hide your messy office background or just liven things up a bit… use a virtual background. This is just an image that displays behind you instead of what's actually there.

The technology detects the difference between you – and your background – and replaces your selected image (or video) as the new picture.

You don't need to have a fancy green screen, however, it works best when you have even lighting (no shadows) and are up against a solid colored wall. A cluttered or busy background makes it more difficult for the technology to decipher you from the varied colored items in the background.

Image Size Considerations?

Before you jump in and spend time selecting a picture, think about the right dimensions first. Choosing an image size that matches the aspect ratio of your computer's camera is best.

Standard horizontal images of 1280 x 720 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels (a 16:9 ratio) often work the best for desktop and laptop computers. When using a mobile device, images will size appropriately to fit a vertical (or horizontal) view.

In these free stock photo sites, use the search to box to browse images by keyword (like beach, mountains, living room) to find an image to download. NOTE: You don't need an image created just for backgrounds, any .jpg of .png will work.

Do a search for "Virtual backgrounds for…. (Zoom, Skype, etc)." We found many sites that offer a variety of different backgrounds from college themes to Star Trek and other iconic movie/TV show themes.

Your Own Images

Don't forget about your own saved images. Go through your camera roll and see what pictures you already have – or take some specifically for this purpose!

Does your communication have a life of its own?

In today's tech world, nothing is confidential. By this I mean that what you think is private stuff has an easier chance of being made public. Yes, of course there are personal files and corporate secrets that are to be held close to the chest and not shared with others. And we work hard to keep those confidential.

But the fact remains, that email is easily shared, text comments find themselves in one of the social media platforms, and a video that is meant just for you suddenly goes viral.

So how can you avoid potential embarrassment? Here's a mantra that will hold you in good stead...

"Don't write or say anything that you
don't want on the front page of USA Today."

Leadership
Do you recognize these types of managers?

I've worked with a lot of managers ... some I reported to, many others were clients. As I see it, there are four types: autocratic, democratic, benevolent, and egalitarian.

These different approaches vary based on the individual's belief system and decision making preferences.

1. Autocratic. This type of manager has 99 votes; the employee has one. Everything is run by an iron hand. "Do what I say and don't question it."

2. Democratic. This manager style is to hold off on decisions until there is a majority vote or everyone agrees.

3. Benevolent. "We know what is good for our employees. We have their best interests at heart."

4. Egalitarian. The definition of egalitarian is equality. This style is creating an environment of mutual respect. At the core is a belief that every employee is valued … from the janitor to the president; each has a unique contribution to make. Everyone shares the responsibility for success. Two-way communications is the norm.

Sure, given different situations, a manager will use any one of these styles. And rightly so! The question is, which is the predominant one? That's what "labels" the manager's essential approach to leading.
