[Libs-Or] Reporting an Inventory of Oregon Tribal Cultural Items

Hi,

In response to the post below about a map of Native nations and cultural institutions, someone asked if there were requirements for Oregon universities and colleges to report about Native cultural items in their collections. The answer is yes, but the process is still in development.

In November 2017, Governor Brown signed Executive Order No. 17-22<https://www.oregon.gov/gov/Documents/executive_orders/eo_17-12.pdf>, which established the Task Force on Oregon Tribal Cultural Items<https://www.oregon.gov/gov/pages/TCITF_aboutus.aspx> to create a process where entities are required to provide Tribal governments an inventory of Native American cultural items in their holdings or under their stewardship. The executive order applies to all state agencies, public universities & colleges, and public schools in Oregon.

For the first phase, the task force focused on state agencies, and the group provided a report<https://www.oregon.gov/gov/Documents/Task%20Force%20Report%20to%20Governor.pdf> to Governor Brown in November 2018. The task force is currently working on a process for higher education institutions as a follow-up to their meeting with representatives from that group earlier this spring, but the pandemic has slowed their progress. In future phases, the task force will work with representatives from the remaining target communities, which may include entities not specifically mentioned in the executive order, like local governments.

Dear Jennifer;

The Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums is developing a map showing the locations of Native communities and cultural centers. To date, it has added over 600 locations.

It is also developing a map of non-Native collecting institutions holding Native materials, which will be released later. If you can help get word out to non-indigenous collecting institutions, it will speed the development of the map.
