Just wanted to let you know about some of the free classes and webinars offered by the Network of the National Library of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region (NNLM PNR) for October. Can't make it to a live session? All sessions listed (except for the ABCs of DNA) will be recorded and available to view later using the same link to register.

ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers: Librarians working with the public need to be aware of issues surrounding genetics and resources to assist patrons in locating and evaluating sometimes complex and confusing information associated with their health. The class will cover genomic health literacy and provide reliable resources regarding health conditions with a genetic component, privacy, genetic testing, and provide an opportunity to become better equipped with the resources you need to address the genetic health information needs of your community. Environmental Justice & Community-Engaged Research in Communities of Color: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and low-wealth communities have been shown to host disproportionate numbers of environmental hazards and Locally Undesirable Land Uses (LULUs) including landfills, incinerators, petrochemical operations, refineries, industrial animal operations, among other uses. This disproportionate burden is known as environmental injustice which is caused by racism embedded in our social, economic, planning, and environmental policies. In this presentation, the speaker will talk about how community-engaged research approaches including community-university partnerships, public science, citizen science, and community-owned and managed research (COMR) can be used to study and address these issues. Metrics Toolkit: A Tool for Navigating the Research Metrics Landscape: The Metrics Toolkit is an open access resource aimed at helping researchers, evaluators, and librarians understand and responsibly use research metrics, including bibliometrics and altmetrics. The Toolkit provides evidence-based information about research metrics across disciplines, including how each metric is calculated, where it can be found, and how it should (and should not) be applied. Join this PNR Rendezvous to hear how it can be used by librarians to facilitate research impact outreach and education efforts, helping authors and institutional evaluators gain knowledge about specific metrics and choose appropriate metrics based on the type of impact being considered and the nature of one's work. Fight Plastic Pollution Through Citizen Science Online Presentation and Q&A: The Marine Debris Tracker (also known as Debris Tracker) project helps over 25+ organizations collect data about where litter is showing up across the country - not just near water. This data contributes to maps used by researchers working on managing pollution worldwide. Materials are available in a variety of languages to get you tracking.
