In fall 2020, the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office will embark on a new initiative that will bring skills-building and cash grants to hundreds of U.S. small and rural libraries.
We are seeking six (6) outreach consultants to help announce this opportunity to library workers in small/rural communities, especially people who may not be reached by our typical communications channels. The work period will take place between September and December 2020.
A successful outreach consultant candidate will have:
· Experience working in a small/rural library. (IMLS defines a rural community as one that is more than, or equal to, five miles from an urbanized area and a small community to be libraries with a legal service area population of 25,000 or less.)
· Extensive connections with library workers within the small/rural library community
· Experience leading conversations through their role in the library (e.g., community forums, book clubs, board meetings)
· Willingness and enthusiasm for spreading the word about this new grant
· Current membership in either ALA or the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL)
Working with ALA Public Programs Office staff, outreach consultants will:
* Conduct outreach to small/rural library workers to promote the grant opportunity via email, phone, webconferencing or other means
* Serve as a first point-of-contact for library workers in their region who have questions about the grant and refer applicants to ALA staff as needed
* Conduct outreach to state libraries and state library associations in your geographic region to promote the grant opportunity
* Participate in monthly check-in calls or Zoom meetings with ALA staff during the application period (September 2020-December 2020)
* Be available to provide feedback on project content as needed.
The ALA Public Programs Office will provide each outreach consultant with a $1,000 honorarium, payable in two installments in October 2020 and December 2020.
To apply, please prepare the following materials. Applications must be submitted electronically as a single PDF document that includes:
* A brief statement explaining your interest in this position (500 words max, please). Please highlight memberships, organizational affiliations and other information that will illustrate your capacity to reach often-unreached segments of the small/rural library field.
* Your résumé.
The single PDF application must be submitted via email by 11:59 p.m. CT on Sunday, September 13, to Sarah Ostman, communications manager, at sostman at ala.org<mailto:sostman at ala.org>. All applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, September 18.
As ALA seeks to recruit a diverse group of advisors, applicants are invited but not required to share information about their racial and ethnic background, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or cognitive differences, and age within their statement of interest.
