GRAPHICS - Find Culturally Diverse Images

Do you need to add images to your social media posts, flyers, handouts, etc… and want them to reflect all types of people and backgrounds?

In many stock photo websites, it is often difficult to find pictures that are culturally diverse. They have a tendency to feature Caucasians who are often young, attractive and able-bodied. And when you do find an image with a variety of skin colors, they may appear to be unrealistic and a little "staged."

One of our subscribers asked us for help in finding pictures of people reflecting different nationalities, ethnicities, cultures. This way your documents and social media presence will be more inclusive.

Here is a list of some free and paid resources where you can find images that represent the diversity in our world.

Quick Definitions:

Royalty-Free: When you download or purchase images from these sites they are typically referred to as Royalty-Free. This is a type of license used by stock photography agencies to sell stock images. This means you pay for the license only once, and you can use it forever within the accepted ways, without any further payment obligations.

Attribution: Some sites encourage you to include an attribution link to the site to say thank you and give exposure to the photographer.

Be sure to review the stock photo site's license agreement.

Explore what's underneath without challenging

My friend had a really tough week and deserved a break on the weekend. On that Saturday afternoon, she called and said, "I'm sorry it took a while to get back to you; we've had company all day long."

My first reaction was to say, "What do you mean you've had company? Don't your friends know you need to veg-out?" It would have sounded challenging and judgmental.

So instead, I pulled out one of the techniques we use in sensitive situations to explore what is really going on, without being abrasive or too nosy.

The trick is to simply repeat what you've heard ... in a neutral tone of voice with a question mark at the end.

"You've had company all day long?"

The result is that my friend feels comfortable opening up and telling me what is going on, without thinking that I have overstepped my bounds. She was able to tell me what was most important to her.

I gained the information I wanted and she felt listened to and cared about.

Work examples:

You hear: "Wow, that was hard."

You may think you know what that's all about. You might say, "What was hard?" or "What do you mean?" But if you simply repeat ... you give the other person an open-ended way to reply so that you can hear what is really going on.

People tend to relax and divulge the good stuff when you don't ask specific questions, but rather give a neutral, yet receptive, reply that let's them say what is on their mind.

Using this technique, you could say, "That was hard?" Notice the question mark at the end and then wait to hear what comes next.

Another example: "Boy, he's in a bad mood today."

Instead of, "What do you mean by that?", "He's often that way." or "What happened?"

Try simply repeating, in a neutral welcoming manner, with the voice going up at the end to make it a question.

"He's in a bad mood today?"

You'll be surprised how this technique will avoid confrontation and increase clarity. It will also help to build trust.

In which mode are you most of the time?

Steven Covey, in his book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders” says, “Begin with the end in mind.” Know where you want to go. Focus on the ultimate end result.

Having a vision is one way to have the "end in mind". In this case, it is what you ultimately want to achieve and be known for. It's a unifying aspect. It’s a motivating element because everyone will be on the same page. It’s the glue that gives the organization its greatest reason for succeeding.

Beginning with the end in mind is a great technique to use at every level: your organization, your team, your project. What is it you ultimately want to achieve? Knowing this will make the journey more effective and more enjoyable. It also means other people will follow more easily.
