This is fantastic Emily!
Thank you and thanks to all the parties involved in putting together the OLA TSRT Critical Cataloging Repository. This initiative is extremely relevant, not only for our bibliographic data but is also incredibly useful to library professionals as an source of EDI and Antiracism knowledge and personal growth.
Great job!
Marci

Hello,
The OLA Technical Services Roundtable would like to introduce you to a new tool created and provided by the TSRT - OLA Critical Cataloging Repository<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/u8T9C82xYBSLzGnsnKa2->.
In order to help facilitate work being done in libraries toward anti-racist, anti-oppressive librarianship, the OLA Technical Services Roundtable (TRST) has created a space for collaboration on working to select respectful and inclusive language in catalog records, including choosing language that people use to describe themselves.
The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) comprise a subject vocabulary widely used in libraries for organizing and collecting information resources. LCSH facilitate a user's search for resources with similar subject matter. However, the process for proposing new terms or revising existing terms can be slow. The vocabulary also perpetuates bias. The consistency and interoperability of LCSH is good, but sometimes replacement or supplemental terms are necessary.
It is our hope that this subject heading repository will allow for less duplication of efforts by libraries, be helpful for institutions doing this important work, as well as be a catalyst for change within libraries to make catalogs inclusive for all.
The goal of this sheet is to help institutions identify subject headings and language within their catalogs that should be either added, removed, or changed to better enhance discovery of diversity titles within our catalogs. There are terms currently used within our bibliographic data that is culturally insensitive and it is our role as catalogers to use anti-racist, anti-oppressive language to support the diverse titles within our collections. Additionally, there are terms that are historically left out of catalogs, leading to lesser discovery of our diverse titles. It is our responsibility to allow for enhanced discovery of those titles within our keyword search capabilities.
This is an open-source repository of terms. As our library institutions grow in understanding of sensitivity in our catalogs, this tool is available to share this knowledge with others. As your library makes enhancements to your subject headings for the purpose of providing more sensitive language or increasing discovery of our diverse titles, please add that content to this repository to share wildly with fellow colleagues and institutions.
A note from TSRT: some of this language was used with permission from Heather Pitts who wrote it for the State Library website<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/IvQPC9ryXLi9M0ouE7u12> on inclusive language.
NOTE: Each library needs to take responsibility for judging each of these terms and their prospective replacements. These often critical topics do not have consensus, so you will want to research multiple perspectives before deciding to change these terms in your catalog.
To find the repository, please all take a look at the two spots on our TSRT page, found here<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/kL6_C0Rm3XiZMx6S2qXxD> and here<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/iwxXCgJGXQtpm3Vh3vEMm>. As a reminder, this repository belongs to all of us, so if you want to add to it, please do so! In addition, if you see any edits or suggested changes, please feel free! It is open to all, so make it a useful tool for yourself.
Finally, I want to give thanks to the members of the TSRT for working on making this so! It has been so inspiring, working with you all to create this project, especially so quickly. Extra thank you to Heather, Sarah, Ross, Amy, Krystynn, Mariko, Lillian and Robert for your extra efforts on this project!
