Intermediate Archives

The NEW class takes students beyond basic archival processing guidelines to address how to deal with specific types of items found in collections such as newspaper clippings and post-it notes. This class will take a more specific look at the description of items and folders. Both Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) will be explored more in depth to help students create better finding aids.

Learning objectives include:
·    Process different types of materials often found in collections
·    Accurately describe items found in collections
·    Use EAD and DACs to create better finding aids
·    Integrate preservation practices while working with collections

This course consists of four one-hour sessions:
·    Tuesday, August 24, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

·    Thursday, August 26, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

Introduction to Archival Practice

This course provides an overview of archival practice for those librarians that suddenly find themselves working with archival material. Participants will learn how to assist patrons with archival requests, creating and implementing basic procedures, and useful workflows.

The course will cover:
·    What constitutes an archive
·    Working with collections
·    Describing and organizing archival materials
·    Creating a finding aid and collection maintenance

This course consists of four 90-minute sessions:

·    Thursday, September 16, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm CDT
·    Tuesday, September 21, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm CDT
