Free Webinar
Free Emergency Broadband Benefit Training

Thursday, July 22, 2021 | 11:00 AM–12:00 PM Eastern

PLA members and other front line library staff are encouraged to participate in a free, live 1-hour webinar and training session with the FCC on the federal Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) on Thursday, July 22 at 11:00 AM Eastern/10:00 AM Central. The American Library Association is working with Heartland Forward to host the session for libraries to make sure eligible households know how to take advantage of the temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit, which provides discounts of up to $50 per month on internet service and an additional $100 credit for a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

In April, ALA Past President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr. said of EBB, “The American Library Association and library workers nationwide welcome the creation of the Emergency Broadband Benefit program as one step among many needed to address longstanding barriers to broadband access and use. K-12 school, college and university, and public libraries see first-hand the digital chasms so many students, families, and people of all ages have experienced.”

As a trusted community hub for information and connectivity, libraries can play a crucial role in helping eligible residents learn about and sign up for the program. The webinar will walk attendees through program eligibility and the enrollment process. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions to federal agency staff in advance or during the training.

Heartland Forward has also created a toolkit of printable and shareable materials about the Emergency Broadband Benefit<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDEyNTY4NSZwPTEmdT0xMDY3NTg5ODk1JmxpPTg4MjAzMDA1/index.html>.

In addition to raising awareness of the EBB program, libraries can apply for funding to purchase connected devices and broadband internet connections for off-site use by library patrons that lack internet access. Applications are open NOW through August 13 for the Emergency Connectivity Fund<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDEyNTY4NSZwPTEmdT0xMDY3NTg5ODk1JmxpPTg4MjAzMDA3/index.html>, and ALA provides detailed resources for libraries to participate at www.ala.org/advocacy/ECF<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDEyNTY4NSZwPTEmdT0xMDY3NTg5ODk1JmxpPTg4MjAzMDA3/index.html>.
