Subject: Research Study on Community-based Organizations

My name is Dr. Kristen L. Becker, and I'm an Assistant Professor in Texas Woman's University's School of Library and Information Science program. As a former Library Director, I struggled to engage staff and board members with periodic strategic planning initiatives for several reasons. First, research shows that staff members do not value strategic planning because they believe the final product does nothing but gather dust on a shelf. Second, the strategic planning tools available to the library did not seem appropriate to a service-minded institution.

I have identified your organization as a State Library with the hope that you can forward this email to your state's libraries and museums. The study consists of a 10-question survey and should take between 2 and 10 minutes to complete.

Participation in this survey is voluntary, and organizations may refuse to participate in the survey. If you do participate in the survey, you may withdraw from the study at any time. Please be aware that there is a potential risk of loss of confidentiality in all email, downloading, electronic meetings, and internet transactions.

The purpose of this study is 1) to determine the extent of knowledge service-oriented organizations have of the SCREAM evaluation tool, and 2) determine if the gender of the respondent impacts the perceived focus of the organization (service-driven or market-driven).

Please note: If you are not a Director, CEO, or Board Member of your organization, please forward this email to the appropriate individual(s). Additionally, please feel free to forward to local libraries, museums, or other community-based organizations (non-profits, etc.) that may wish to help with this research study.
