Hello everyone,

[cid:image003.jpg at 01D7261B.B32D9380]Here's the compilation of online learning opportunities for February. Be sure to check out the State Library's Continuing Education LibGuide<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/conted/> throughout the month as new webinars are added to the COVID-19<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/conted/covid19> and EDI<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/conted/edi> sections when announced.

The following online learning opportunities are free to Oregon library staff, volunteers, and board members:

April 6, 10:00a, Data that Counts: An Introduction to Census Data for Public Libraries<http://www.ala.org/pla/education/onlinelearning/webinars/datathatcounts> (PLA)
This webinar will introduce you to the important role that public libraries can play in assisting individuals, groups, and organizations with finding, accessing, and using census data for planning and decision making. Resources and tools for searching basic census sources will also be covered. You will hear from librarians who have offered data literacy programs at their libraries to reach multiple audiences, including small businesses and entrepreneurs, local historians, students, and nonprofits and government agencies.

April 6, 2:00p PT, Introducing the Information Literacy Reflection Tool (ACRL)
Join us for a look at the Information Literacy Reflection Tool<https://ilreflection.org/> (ILRT). The tool consists of statements that prompt students to reflect on their Information Literacy practices. When used thoughtfully, this kind of metacognitive assessment approach positions students as experts on their own learning, and holds promise for transferring skills and knowledge. Session participants will have the opportunity to discuss some ways it could be useful in teaching, and critically reflect on its potential to empower IL learners and move us towards a more just and equitable curriculum.

Registration is open to any library staff-person, but is limited to 100 attendees in the session, so register soon! https://forms.gle/Rc3zJzwKSBmcHxSTA <https://forms.gle/Rc3zJzwKSBmcHxSTA%20> This session will also be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. If you register, we will email you a link to the recording after the session. Questions about our webinars can be directed to ACRL-Oregon President Rachel Bridgewater at acrlor at olaweb.org<mailto:acrlor at olaweb.org>.

April 8, 11:00a - 12:30p PT (Note, this is 30 minutes longer than usual), Prejudice: Responding to prejudicial comments from customers, presented by Ryan Dowd.
Topics to be covered: Why most approaches to confronting prejudice actually increase prejudice (according to research!); how to use a "Peanut Butter Opener" with people who might react aggressively; fifteen strategies to choose from depending on who the person is. NOTE: This training focuses on addressing prejudicial comments from customers/patrons/clients. It is not designed to help you draft policies or more broadly create an anti-racist organization. These are great topics, but they are beyond the scope of what we can cover in 90 minutes. A workbook will be emailed to registrants from ryan at homelesslibrary.com<mailto:ryan at homelesslibrary.com> on Wednesday, April 7.

A recording (with closed captioning) will be available in Oregon's Niche Academy a few days after the live event; Oregon staff, volunteers, etc., can attend for free by signing up for the registration announcement list here<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Reg4HomlessnessTraining>. If you're already on the announcement list and/or have access to Oregon's Academy with Dowd webinars, no need to sign up again :)

April 16, 5:00p PT, An Evening with Ibram Kendi, in Conversation About How To Be an Anti-Racist<https://leadership.oregonstate.edu/provost/provosts-lecture-series>
Oregon State University invites you to join<https://oregonstate.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_U-vyGdHNR9-IPqkUZfGouQ> a virtual event featuring Ibram X. Kendi - National Book Award Winner (2019), Guggenheim Fellow, historian, three-time NY Times best selling author and journalist. He is the author of many books including Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction, and three #1 New York Times bestsellers, How to Be an Antiracist; Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, co-authored with Jason Reynolds; and Antiracist Baby, illustrated by Ashley Lukashevsky. His most recent book, Be Antiracist: A Journal for Awareness, Reflection, and Action, was released in October.

April 15, 10:00a PT, Hidden Labor in Open Source Software<https://www.lyrasis.org/Content/Pages/Event-Details.aspx?Eid=E236AF08-FC7C-EB11-80EF-00155D0A2721> (LYRASIS)
This year LYRASIS is focusing on the challenges and opportunities created by Open Source Software (OSS). Supporting open infrastructure is a hot topic in the library community. Much of the conversation focuses on the sustainability of open source software and how communities fund their work. The focus on software development and the costs associated with it largely ignores the intricacy and nuance of community work. During this session, attendees will: Examine theories related open source software communities; identify methods for resourcing community work; learn how communities organize their work; and identify strategies for governing community work

April 21, 9:00a PT, Free facilitator training for 1619 Project learning circles
P2PU<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT05OTM1NjM3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0NDg2MTAmbGk9ODUyNDYyMzE/index.html> will host a free event to teach library staff how to hold learning circles about The 1619 Project<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT05OTM1NjM3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0NDg2MTAmbGk9ODUyNDYyMzI/index.html>. In support of the ALA's Preservation Week and to honor the contributions of its honorary chair, Nikole Hannah-Jones, to public knowledge, P2PU is presenting a free learning circle facilitation training that will explore the basics of running peer-based learning circles using The 1619 Project, a long-form journalism initiative that examines and reframes the history of slavery in the USA. The training will cover learning circles (how and why they work) and more.
