The ALA Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE) is seeking feedback on an update to the ALA Code of Ethics. Details below.
Hello,
ALA's Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE)<http://www.ala.org/groups/committees/ala/ala-profethic> is looking for feedback from the library community about an update to the ALA Code of Ethics. In July 2020, the COPE voted to establish a working group to explore the creation of a new principle of the ALA Code of Ethics<http://www.ala.org/tools/ethics> to address racial and social justice. In collaboration with member groups of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach, a working group was created. The working group is co-chaired by Andrew Harant and Sheri Edwards and the members are Nicole Cooke, Alexandra Gomez, Sarah Houghton, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Liladhar Pendse, and Jennifer Shimada. This group has drafted a ninth principle for the ALA Code of Ethics that states our profession's responsibility to support and advance racial and social justice and its obligation to ensure equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Post feedback on this Google Doc: "Library Community Feedback Wanted: ALA Code of Ethics, 9th Principle"<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TKlVtAVm7sm0mceVU6YUF3yHhSgOmIWrs-zfcD_ZL7g/edit?usp=sharing> by Wednesday, April 14. COPE requests that you post comments or add suggestions, rather than edit the document directly. To post a comment, select "insert" in the top menu, and the click "Comment." Comments may be posted anonymously (if you're not signed into a Google account) or publicly (if you're signed into your Google account).
The Committee on Professional Ethics will revise the draft in light of your suggestions and plans to distribute the final proposed 9th principle to ALA Council prior to ALA Annual Conference<https://2021.alaannual.org/>. Please feel free to share this request for feedback with others in your librarian communities.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions, and please let me know if you have any questions,
Stephen Matthews, Chair
Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE)
