Wednesday, May 11, 2022 | 11:00a | 75-minute webinar | Free

What should library staff do when self-proclaimed “citizen journalists” enter the library claiming a right to question employees and film in any space accessible to the public? Learn what your library board and staff need to know about so-called “First Amendment audits,” and how you can prepare by adopting well-crafted policies and training staff. This program will also cover the library as a public forum and the necessary components of user behavior policies and meeting room policies. The program will include opportunities to participate in role-play scenarios that demonstrate best practices when board members interact with library users and members of the public. The program will include a Q&A with presenters.

This webinar is free to Oregon library staff and board members. Please be sure to scroll to the bottom of the registration page.

We Can't Go It Alone: Community-Centered Collaboration during COVID-19

Thursday, May 5, 2022 | 12:00p | One-hour webinar | Free

Libraries, archives, and museums have adapted their facilities, services, and programs in response to community needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many found they didn’t have to do it alone. Building networks that foster information exchange and collaboration among museums, libraries, and other local assets and organizations can help us manage uncertainty and strengthen our capacity. Our panelists, who represent a variety of cultural heritage institutions, will share their experiences with local, state, and national partnerships and networks during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight successful strategies that can help you lead staff and public during a crisis.

This tutorial will share how to prepare for and respond appropriately to a first amendment audit.

The First Amendment protects free speech and access to public information, but many people do not fully understand how these rights relate to taking pictures or videos. So-called First Amendment auditors count on this confusion to trigger click-worthy confrontations. Understanding these details can help library staff avoid disruptive encounters and bad publicity for the library.

This presentation reviews the theory and rationale for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and summarizes research on its effectiveness. Presenters examine certain contradictions in UDL, such as how a learning method that is tailored to individual differences can work for an entire class. Drawing on their long-term study of library book clubs for those with intellectual disabilities (ID), Leah Plocharczyk and Matt Conner, explore these issues in terms of specific case studies and suggest remedies. The presentation concludes with actionable ways to implement UDL for college classrooms.
