Hello fellow Freedom Fighters,

To everyone on your Library Board, Friends of the Library, and other contact lists of supporters, please share this great online training opportunity next week from ALA’s “United For Libraries” division. The State Library of Oregon is sponsoring statewide availability.

I’ve highlighted sessions below on the topic of Intellectual Freedom that I think would be most beneficial. See the full schedule for more sessions offered, particularly on EDI, that are highly recommended as well.

The link for registration is in the original forwarded email.

TUESDAY, AUG 9

Session 1: Intellectual Freedom Challenges: How to Strengthen Your Library's Response

8:00 am Pacific

In this session, we'll discuss how to develop a roadmap that will guide your response as a Board member, Trustee, Friend/Foundation member, or academic, working in tandem with your library staff when an intellectual freedom challenge arises. You'll learn how to succinctly articulate your library's policies, and ensure the library is speaking with one voice, effectively communicating internally and externally, and responding in a timely fashion.

Keynote 1: Library Workers are NOT Okay: How Trustees, Friends & Foundations Can Support the Health & Well-Being of Library Staff

11:30 am Pacific

The COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented number of censorship attempts, lack of funding/staff, and additional challenges have left many library workers at a crisis point. Learn how library boards/Trustees can support library workers, and what board members need to know about keeping library workers safe and healthy.

WEDNESDAY, AUG 10

Session 4: Our Collection & DEI: A Richmond Public Library Story

9:45 am Pacific

As the former home of the confederacy, the Richmond Public Library (RPL) had decades of decision making that did not embrace all its residents. Our director, Scott Firestine, is a firm supporter of EID in all ways for RPL with full Board of Trustees support. The focus of this proposal is our approach toward our collection. Our challenge was twofold. First, we needed to identify gaps in our holdings. Our goal is a collection that reflects authors and main characters that are different colors, genders, and disabilities. Especially in a city that has a large community of marginalized African Americans, literature that readers can identify with is essential. We, at the same time, sought to inventory material that reflected “Lost Cause” mythology. Once we completed our inventory, we worked with public historians and experts from our local rare and special collections to provide context and determine the best location for such items. Over the past 8 months we have made significant progress and would love to talk to Trustees, Foundations, and Friends groups about our approach and its benefits.

Session 5: Preparing for a Material Challenge

10:45 am Pacific

This program centers on the topic of intellectual freedom and how it weathers a material challenge. As intellectual freedom centers on the idea of a person's ability to examine a concept from every angle, the program will discuss the value of ensuring a well-balanced collection featuring EDI materials. To ensure that the right of intellectual freedom is met for each patron, materials must include themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The program will also discuss meeting EDI concerns in regard to ensuring diverse voices have a role during a material reconsideration process within both a committee and a trustee board. As a result, this will include discussion on the value of approaching staffing and trustee recruitment with EDI in mind. Tonya and David will discuss their previous experience handling book challenges and how they worked with their trustees during the process. The presentation will include information on how the issue was handled, what Tonya and David learned, and how they would respond now if facing the same situation.
