POSITION: Interim Reference and Instruction Librarian – Social Sciences

Position Summary



The Interim Reference and Instruction Librarian – Social Sciences provides
reference and information services for the University’s students and
faculty as well as members of the general public; participates in a dynamic
instructional program, including classroom and online instruction; consults
and collaborates with scholars; and coordinates information resources to
support the instructional and research needs of a diverse institution. This
position will serve as an interim liaison to academic units such as
Political Science and Criminology & Criminal Justice.



This position will have regular evening and possibly some weekend shifts at
the reference desk. Also, this position may teach occasional evening
library instruction sessions, depending on the needs of the library and
academic departments.



Portland State University non-tenure track faculty members contribute to
faculty governance activities within the Library and the University and
engage in research activities and professional service, as assigned.



This full-time, temporary, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position
reports to the Research & Instruction Services Manager. This position will
also work closely with the Manager of Reference Services.



This position covers liaison duties for a library faculty member on another
assignment. It is scheduled to end June 30, 2023, but it may be eligible
for an additional one year extension.





Duties:

   -

   Supports the instructional and research needs of liaison areas,
   including research consultations for students and faculty.
   -

   Collaborates with teaching faculty to develop discipline-appropriate
   instruction in liaison areas. Shares in the development and delivery of
   course-related instruction in the general education program.
   -

   Assesses the information needs and availability of information resources
   for liaison areas; selects books and other information resources as
   appropriate.
   -

   Participates in the Library’s information literacy and general
   instruction program via online platforms (synchronous and asynchronous) and
   face-to-face (if appropriate under the University’s COVID safety
   guidelines).
   -

   Provides reference and information services for the University’s
   students and faculty as well as members of the general public through the
   Library’s reference delivery service and through various information and
   communications technologies, and will include regular evening and possibly
   some weekend hours.
   -

   Develops learning objects, tutorials, subject guides, and course guides.
   -

   Maintains awareness of scholarly communication and copyright issues in
   general and within the assigned disciplines and contributes to advocacy
   efforts.
   -

   Keeps colleagues informed of current issues and developments in the
   field related to the subject areas of responsibility.
   -

   Engages in scholarship and research activities, as assigned.
   -

   Contributes to faculty governance activities within the Library and the
   University, as assigned.
   -

   Engages in professional service, as assigned.
   -

   Supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the University and the
   Library.
   -

   Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

   -

   ALA-accredited MLS.



Preferred Qualifications

   -

   Experience working in an academic, special, or public library,
   particularly in person or online reference experience
   -

   Experience providing research support services to faculty or other
   researchers
   -

   Experience teaching and/or demonstrated familiarity with information
   literacy concepts
   -

   Experience developing online learning objects such as research guides
   and video tutorials
   -

   Demonstrated familiarity with social sciences or a degree in one of the
   assigned liaison areas



Compensation

Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically
start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band.
PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking
into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and
abilities, market parity, and internal equity.



The starting annual salary for this position will be $4,732.00/month but
may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the
budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. An excellent
