Introduction to Health Literacy for Libraries - Wednesday, June 15, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT
Health Literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy indicates only 12% of Americans have the necessary health literacy skills. Health literacy skills include locating health services, understanding drug labels, and following treatment instructions. Libraries are a natural conduit for working to improve the health literacy of their communities. Through print and digital resources, programs, and partnerships – libraries can bring attention to the critical need for health literacy.

Media Literacy in Libraries - Thursday, June 16, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT
Libraries are at the center of information literacy. Though frequently used interchangeably, there is a distinct difference between media literacy and information literacy. Media literacy focuses on analyzing media content and the effect of media on society, while information literacy is the ability to identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively. Librarians and staff will benefit from learning how to interpret media messages and their effect on individuals and society by applying media literacy theory and practices. Attendees will also learn how to pass this knowledge on to patrons and colleagues to help them better evaluate media.
