WINDOWS - What To Do BEFORE Updating from Version 10 to 11

Intermediate

Have you been wondering if you should upgrade from Windows 10 to the newest operating system, Windows 11? What features will you get? Is there a huge learning curve?

[Windows 11]

How to Get Windows 11

If you purchased a new computer in the last year, chances are it came with Windows 11 since it has been the default platform starting in October 2021.

You can also upgrade your operating system (on a desktop or laptop) if your computer is eligible and compatible. We'll show you how to find out if it is below. Good news! The upgrade is free!

IMPORTANT: If you have an IT department or a technology support person, it's always best to check with them before doing any type of upgrade. They may know specific considerations for your equipment.

How to You Know if Your Computer is Eligible for an Upgrade

If you have a computer that has Windows 10 (or 8.1), you may be able to upgrade at no cost to Windows 11 if your laptop or PC meets the system requirements.

To check to see if you can make the change:

[check for updates]

· From the Windows Start icon, choose Settings.

· Select Update & Security from the menu.

· NOTE: In this window, there may already be a notification that you're ready for Windows 11.

· Click the Check for Updates button. If your computer meets the requirements, a Download and install button will be shown. STOP!

· Don't run the install yet. It's good to know that you can upgrade but follow the steps below BEFORE moving to Windows 11. (See How to Prepare for Windows 11 Upgrade below)

[Windows 11 update]

If your computer will NOT automatically upgrade, you could see a message that shows that your PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements. If that's the case, you can run the PC Health Check (an app in Windows). This will let you see if there are changes that you can make to meet the requirements. (Follow specific directions in item #4 below.)

[Window 11]

How to Prepare for the Windows 11 Upgrade

Here's what to do BEFORE updating to make sure the transition runs smoothly.

1. Make Sure You Have Windows 10 UPDATED To the Latest Version.

To see if your version is current, first, close all of your open files, Internet browsers and apps on your device and then:

[check for updates]

1. From the Windows Start icon, choose Settings and select Update and Security from this window.
2. Click the Check for Updates button.
3. Then, REBOOT your system by going to Start, and choose Power, and select Restart.
4. Go back to Steps #1 and #2 above to check for updates AGAIN as sometimes you can only update from the previous version, and you may be a few updates behind.
5. Then, REBOOT your system AGAIN.
6. Repeat this process until it says, "You're up to date" so that you have applied ALL of the updates to Windows 10 before upgrading to Windows 11.

[backup]

2. BACKUP Your Files

An upgrade to Windows 11 should not affect the files saved on your computer. However, we always need to prepare for a potential glitch, so do a complete backup before you update. You can save your files in a number of ways:

· Save a copy of your data to an external hard drive (like a thumb or flash drive that you plug into your computer via a USB connection).

· Upload to a cloud-based service such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive. You can learn more about cloud storage in a number of Tech-Talk articles.

· Use an outside backup service like Carbonite and make sure you have a current backup saved.

· Copy the files on your computer to a network file server.

In any case, make sure that you have a copy of important documents in another place, other than the computer that you're updating to Windows 11. TIP: One of these options should always be in place so that you have a backup of your data ... not just before upgrading.

[external devices]

3. Unplug External Devices From Your Computer

So that you don't receive any errors in the PC Health Check (below) or while updating to Windows 11, unplug any nonessential external devices. This hardware includes headphones/speakers, external hard/jump drives, printers, etc.

4. Use the PC HEALTH CHECK Tool

If your computer has installed the current Windows updates you'll have the PC Health Check app. This app will tell you if your PC is ready for Windows 11 ... and if not, it often gives you specific things you can do to make it so.

To open the app, type "PC Health Check" in the Taskbar Search box and select the program from the menu.

· You'll see a button (Check now). Choosing it will let you see if your computer meets the system requirements for Windows 11.

· You may also find details for changes you may need to make if your computer is not ready yet for the update (like freeing up space).

· And it gives you an overview of your computer's performance and helps you take action to solve problems.

[PC healthcheck]

5. Delete Outdated Files or Programs You're Not Using

[view storage]

To free up space for Windows 11 delete files you no longer need or software/apps that are not used.

Your computer needs about 16 GB of free space to install Windows 11.

To see how much you have, go to Settings, click on System and then select Storage from the left menu.

If you need to free up space, see this Tech-Talk article on how to find large files quickly and delete unused apps and software<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001xmN0YCtAtyhxm8nklxMbeiPZALwabf_6MtuqDRgfgyNC2vzJXhILlPk0BAo7lSSqLg8cYNb-ZydxWrwLy21egFUEVGaZMekrQ-fLkb8laPZmApPaENTYV2bbheDDqFvUsaRIZoAxPWfdQaJCvNsN6AqNoj_kZ_TfeLdOVvn_5DhxxVHmN-9R01AKGfwgK9cDm8YWOep5rRqFw14m87d6Tw%3D%3D%26c%3DiEWjeSJZcPd6YR-aZ4l8u_GEqPLqOKNznbG904Ug4ms9fom2f17ctA%3D%3D%26ch%3DfgdUsPBg9RQUinpFwHfyaj_-fiKGVI2USiQYEQGmSsLxB7lZj2vs2A%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7Cbd3b043a7e2549b29eaf08dadd4bf2b7%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638065615542086314%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Q3IIM0GrFF%2F2hjeYJu101Ohwv9x2%2B%2BIJUZHt18m4soE%3D&reserved=0>.

Finally ... You're Ready to Update

If your computer is eligible and you're ready to install Windows 11, do the following:
· Click the Start icon
· Choose Settings
· Select Update & Security from this window

Click the option to download and install Windows 11. In the process, you will need to make ONE of the choices below. IMPORTANT, depending on what you select, the files on your computer will remain the same or be deleted. Choose carefully.

· Perform a Full Upgrade, which keeps personal files (including drivers), apps, and Windows Settings. This is the default option used most often.

· Keep Data Only will keep personal files (including drivers) only, NOT apps and NOT Windows Settings.

· Clean Install will install Windows 11 and keep NOTHING from the Windows 10 installation, giving your computer a clean start.

For additional support in the update, see Windows 11 FAQs from Microsoft here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001xmN0YCtAtyhxm8nklxMbeiPZALwabf_6MtuqDRgfgyNC2vzJXhILlAAV1gfbJ1icqL5lA-lPD_OVo66QwxfBQb4WiNh5IkmdZ6VpXenCAuaK93o7GcaAknLWg8KP3gAh_dnNz6BEfax_JYrn8j_UeiH18HtWIrTbLKh0vTVz2-m3GaMzJbXyKSQYEfb71UIqKJRv3d_hKDDc_ZzERNLI37RiBol9hT2QMnnCPcm156RaawsicKzaTvscU7UNvpSB%26c%3DiEWjeSJZcPd6YR-aZ4l8u_GEqPLqOKNznbG904Ug4ms9fom2f17ctA%3D%3D%26ch%3DfgdUsPBg9RQUinpFwHfyaj_-fiKGVI2USiQYEQGmSsLxB7lZj2vs2A%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7Cbd3b043a7e2549b29eaf08dadd4bf2b7%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638065615542086314%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=vTtY5pPV6Nsyps4c05T1ZsJzld%2FQhuVXlYnNJcvsuzU%3D&reserved=0>.

Good news! If your computer does NOT meet the system requirements for this update, it's OK. Windows 10 will be supported until October 2025.

Communications: With Self

Feeling Overwhelmed? A Coping Technique

During the last few years, it seems as if we have had so much stuff thrown at us. It is easy to become overwhelmed: so much to do, new things to learn, more responsibilities ... to name just a few.

What can you do? It's unreasonable to expect to be focused all the time.

Here's one technique that works well: tap into your unconscious! Find ways to let it emerge. It will save your sanity. It will bring you a bit of peace. And it will open up the channels of creativity.

· Take a walk and let your mind drift.
· Go outside to stand with your back against a tree.
· Hop in the car and take a little drive.
· Soak in a tub with soothing salts.
· Listen to peaceful music.

When you do these types of things, you start to communicate with your inner self. Ideas will appear. Tension will fade. You will feel re-energized!

Leadership

Autocratic Management Mode

Last week we talked about the four different styles, or rather modes, that a manager or supervisor could be in at any given moment.

Let's look a little bit more at autocratic today.

AUTOCRATIC MODE
When a manager is in an autocratic mode, he or she has 99 votes; the employee has one. Everything is run by an iron hand.
"Do what I say and don't question it."

Here's a true story that shows this management mode in action.

I was meeting with a patent attorney about my earring travel case invention. But for some reason, the conversation veered to my recently published book, "7 Habits of Egalitarian Managers ... Employee Engagement."

I shared the premise with him.

He disagreed with the whole approach and said, "I don’t pay people to think. I pay them to do what I tell them to."

I was astounded at the belief system and the vehemence with which it was spoken.

Of course, there are times when an autocratic role is an important approach. Some organizational decisions are based on unique knowledge (or timing) that requires a manager to make a unilateral decision. That's autocratic leadership at its best.

However, if the autocratic mode is the primary method of working with a team, results will be lacking and short-lived. Morale will be poor; retention low.
