MOBILE - Control Your Phone's Screen Orientation
Intermediate
[mobile phone orientation]
Have you ever noticed when you're using certain apps on your phone, that when you tilt it, the screen switches from a portrait to landscape view? (This happens also on iPad, Tablets and Kindle devices.)
This is called the screen orientation. Depending on what you're doing, the landscape mode may be better…like when you're watching a video – as they are designed to view horizontally.
However, sometimes your phone won't rotate when you want it to… it gets stuck in either portrait or landscape mode and you can't figure out how to switch back.
Or perhaps you don't want it to rotate when your device tilts, but you can't get it to stop.
Let's take a look at screen orientation options both on Apple and Android devices.
How Can you CONTROL the Screen Orientation?
On an iPhone:
You'll find the Screen Orientation setting in the Control Center. Depending on what device model you have, opening it varies.
· First, swipe down from the top right corner of your screen. (If you have an older iPhone, you may need to swipe down from the top middle, or swipe up from the bottom to get to this setting.)
· The lock orientation button is white when enabled, which is the default setting. This means that when you use apps that offer a horizontal view choice, you can tilt your device back and forth from portrait to landscape view.
· To lock the orientation to portrait view, tap the LOCK icon and it will turn red. Now your screen will no longer rotate (unless you use an app that only works in the landscape mode).
Default setting UNLOCKED: The screen WILL tilt from portrait to orientation view.
LOCK the screen orientation so that it doesn't change when you rotate iPhone.

[unlock]
Return to the Control Center later to switch back to the default/unlocked setting.
TIP: If you have made this setting change and your device orientation is not working the way you want it to, try: 1) Closing the app and re-opening it, 2) Updating the app by clicking on the App store icon, then click on your profile in the upper right and scroll down to find the specific app and update it. Or, 3) Try a full power shut-down of your device to restore the default setting (like a reboot!).
Lock Screen Orientation on Android
On an Android device, depending on the model, these steps may vary. Look for something similar if this process doesn't match your device exactly.
· To open the Control Center, swipe down from the top of the screen.
· Tap the Screen Lock icon to LOCK the screen orientation device-wide.
· Return to this screen later when you want to switch back to the default/unlocked setting.

Change the Orientation on a Per-App Basis on an Android Device
In some Android apps, you can make this change just for the one you're using.
· If you're in an app and want to switch orientation, if this option is available, there will be a small rectangle that now shows up in the bottom right corner of the screen. Tap it to LOCK to either the portrait or landscape view.
· Remember, not all apps have the ability to rotate orientation, so if the icon is not displayed, then you cannot control the orientation from inside the app.

Communications
What you wear is your "book cover"
Do you, or do you not, judge a book by its cover?
Be honest with yourself. I think the cover must have some influence ... especially when you have little else to go by. It is usually the first thing you see, right?
The same is true for others' impression of you at work - your colleagues, your manager ... patrons and students. How you dress is the first thing people see.
So how important is your attire in the workplace? If you want to get ahead, it's a strong contributor. A study by OfficeTeam (a leading staffing service) found that "eight of 10 (80 percent) executives interviewed said clothing choices affect an employee's chances of earning a promotion, and the respondents gave some pretty hilarious examples of outfits that missed the mark." (See study and strange attire worn to work<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Yi8ua83ZtNuh-M4ECClCAq6ZkApEy5-b17kPNZfNNyD3_QY6noXeRwJiPLnWeceXVTyzqTfgN2d5iwjYYq4G02KB-L4kflsvt--tsydUeCasaHF6KEszn1eLhAXYJrUMQ8rSrWgW6J9xC4eJIJlLAmHu1XcxarnobKnvjV_2DXVMBf-j8EpXJPKYOHVQs_Bbb8iZfpXpVz5OulOu9_U1qfdQyKmTl90xa-u5WZQqzw-T7TfYwSgBTfaBiKt8iret_HhSuNo6r3t_VZABlTLK3FcIl8T6VYrZ9YOx-06vmeAUGy6ym1M1JA==&c=iiGjSH7HK0MKHS_c6ikn9b0UUReZzKTzqmvFIrOEueUIYTkT9q5_aA==&ch=LUOo4FBJtyO0J4Rd3gThh0Q-LIpzQrmIF4qjJ1oNEnynrQ7dLUhplA==>.)
Yes, things are more casual now ... across the board. But the fact remains that the more professionally you dress, the better impression you will make.

Leadership
The human need for goals
In the book Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, I found an interesting concept about the human need to have goals.
The author proposes the idea that our bodies function somewhat like a bicycle. He says that the "bicycle maintains its poise and equilibrium only so long as it is going forward towards something."
Assuming you have a good bicycle, imagine the trouble you'd have if you were trying to maintain your balance sitting still, with no place to go.
Maltz says, "We are engineered as goal-seeking mechanisms. We are built that way."
When we have no personal [or leadership] goal ... something that fires us up ... we can't go anywhere.
Ask Yourself: Am I keeping my bicycle moving forward as a goal-seeking machine? Am I helping others to optimize their success by doing the same?
