Foundations of Intellectual Freedom

This is an online course with both asynchronous and synchronous instruction. Attendees will watch prerecorded lectures before each live facilitated discussion session on February 16, 24, and March 2, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Central. Attendees will also be given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned after each session through discussion board posts.

Across the nation, administrators in libraries of all sizes are experiencing an increase in material censorship challenges. What is the role of libraries regarding intellectual freedom? And what should it be? Now more than ever, library workers must be prepared to understand policies, best practices, and specific ways we can all support community conversations that support intellectual freedom. Join us for this timely topic and discuss roadblocks to access to knowledge and the library's role in the current landscape.

This workshop is designed to help attendees develop a broad understanding of intellectual freedom as a professional value, identify areas in library policy, procedure, and application of service where barriers to access should be removed, and learn to have conversations about intellectual freedom challenges. A unique format will make this material more approachable and help attendees learn practical applications - three sessions consisting of short information components followed by a small group breakout, where attendees will be led through scenarios.

Learning Objectives:

  * Develop a broad understanding of intellectual freedom as a professional value and be able to recall ALA guidelines, policies, and best practices in intellectual freedom.
  * Identify areas in library policy, procedure and application of service where barriers to access should be removed, privacy should be protected, and more inclusive considerations could increase inclusiveness.
  * Apply the 5 steps to having purposeful conversations about intellectual freedom issues when responding to users and coworkers.
