Tax preparation season is approaching and I wanted to highlight some resources to help get tax filing and other information out to your communities.

  * The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)<https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit-eitc> and Child Tax Credit<https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/2021-child-tax-credit-and-advance-child-tax-credit-payments-resources-and-guidance> offer opportunities for families to receive federal funds, even if they do not earn enough income to pay taxes.
  * Millions of workers qualify for these credits for the first time this year, making awareness critical. Workers move into and out of eligibility based on changes in their marital, parental and financial status.
  * The easiest way for families to receive these funds is to file a tax return.
  * The National League of Cities' blog post, 3 Things to Know About This Year's Tax Season<https://www.nlc.org/article/2022/01/18/3-things-to-know-about-this-years-tax-season/>, offers a good overview of the credits available.
  * EITC Awareness Day is January 28, 2022. It offers a great opportunity to promote some of the resources listed below.

Here are some resources to point to for free or low cost tax filing or preparation services:

CashOregon<https://cashoregon.org/> - a great site to help low income families locate free tax preparation services in Oregon. 211.org<https://www.211info.org/contact-center> can also help in locating tax preparation options.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program<https://taxaide.aarpfoundation.org/> - provides in-person and virtual tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a special focus on taxpayers who are over 50 or have low to moderate income. This program has limited in-person services right now, but they do like to partner with libraries when they can. For more information about hosting opportunities, contact Kathy Goeddel at kathy.go at comcast.net<mailto:kathy.go at comcast.net>
