SOCIAL MEDIA - What's the Difference Between a STORY and a POST on Facebook and Instagram?

The social media landscape is always changing. There are constantly new ways to post, share and reach your followers through many different platforms. And these various apps are in direct competition with each other to get you (and your organization) to use their platform.

So, in an attempt to compete with the popularity of Snapchat, where Stories "disappear" after 24 hours, in 2016 Instagram launched their version of "Stories" followed by Facebook in 2017.



Why, and When, You Might Want to Use a STORY

Because we all know more about Posts (they've been around a long time), it's important that you get an understanding of when and why to use a Story instead of a Post. (Then we'll show you all the technical differences and "how-to" of both.)

Use a STORY if...
·     You want something short, quick and fun.
·     You want higher visibility ... because it pops to the very top.
·     You want it to stand out ... because it shows alone without ads or other stories.
·     You have time-sensitive information ... because a Story doesn't stay up long.
·     You want to separate the info from the regular newsfeed.

Facebook and Instagram ... Both Offer Stories and Posts

Let's quickly look at the technical details that differentiate these two popular platforms so that you can determine if either (or both) are right for you or your organization to use ... and when.


Facebook

·     Post Text, Images and Video together or individually
·     Post from your desktop or on a mobile device
·     Add clickable links in posts


Instagram

·     Post only Images and Video with captions. No text-only posts
·     Designed to only post from a mobile device
·     Clickable links are in the account bio only




What are Facebook and Instagram STORIES?

As a general description, in both Facebook and Instagram, when you post a Story, it is displayed to your audience for 24 hours and then disappears from your feed. Some differences include:

In Facebook:
·     You can "archive" your Story so that you (and only you) can view it later.
·     Just the person posting the Story can see any comments or reactions to it (Likes, Loves, Cares, etc..).
·     Photos are displayed for five-seconds and you can add videos up to 20-seconds long.

In Instagram:
·     You can post as a Story and also choose to add it as a Highlight on your profile page. It remains visible (unless you remove it), even after the original Story has disappeared.
·     Stories cannot receive comments or reactions like normal posts.
·     There is a 15-second limit per individual Story video. TIP: If you select one that's longer, it will be divided into 15-second pieces that are individual Stories played one after the other (up to four, for a total of one minute).



Choosing a Story Instead of a Post

It's important to know how Stories and Posts differ so that you can determine which type to use.

1. A Story is displayed prominently at the TOP of your newsfeed making it very visible to your audience. You don't need any tricks to try to beat the algorithm – your Story is front and center and won't get lost in the newsfeed.

2. Stories are viewed in the vertical format which takes up the whole screen so there's no competition with other posts or ads. Your story gets the viewer's full attention.

3. Because Stories only last for 24 hours, content can be timely (a visiting author event, a book sale) as opposed to the ever-green nature of a regular post.

Stories are intended to be short, memorable and fun. Here are some examples of the type of content for posting as a Story to your organization's account:

·     Share authentic moments from your day
·     Announce important updates or breaking news
·     Promote short-term sales or discounts
·     Tease a new release of an upcoming event
·     Give a sneak peek of a new service
·     Use the tool to create surveys or polls
·     Feature customer testimonials



How to Add a Story in Facebook

In Facebook, you can add a Story in either the desktop or your mobile device. However, the mobile app offers more options.

Here are the steps for adding a story on your mobile device. NOTE: The options are constantly changing, so look for these general steps.

·     Tap your profile picture, then, tap Create story (or Add to Story)
·     Choose to upload an existing photo or video from your device or take a new one.
·     Then get creative with the formats like using the Boomerang for a "burst" of photos, choosing the Text option for just a visual display of words or add Music to your photo or video.
·     Next, choose to add stickers, text overlay and animated effects.
·     When you're ready, tap Done and Share Now to post live.

How to Add a Story in Instagram

·     On your mobile device, tap the Plus (+) button at the top of the screen and choose Story, or swipe right from anywhere in Feed.
·     Tap the capture button at the bottom of the screen to take a photo, or tap and hold to record a video.
·     Or, you can select a photo from your phone's library or gallery by swiping up anywhere on the screen.

·     Now, you can add Text, Stickers or Drawings to your photo or video by tapping on the icons at the top of the screen.
·     When you're ready, click the Share your Story button.

Ways to give a virtual hug

I was struck by a documentary on TV that I happened to stumble upon. It was the personal story of a young, dedicated teacher who finally gave up and walked away from the profession, despite her love for it. The pandemic conditions took its toll.

We also hear from a variety of libraries that staff is simply worn out from the stress of the times. It's hard to know how to completely refuel our mental, physical and emotional selves. There are simple things we can do.

Intentional communication can play a part.

Here's where a virtual hug comes in. There are lots of different ways to show others that you "care" about and support them. Here are a few ideas you can use to reach out to help your colleagues experience a few moments of joy.

In-Person:
·     Try to smile – on the phone and in person.

Leadership: Think Inclusively
Share info ... and ask for it

It's easy to feel left out at times. And yet it's hard to remember to think inclusively.

However, if you do develop this skill, it makes you a superior communicator.

Thinking inclusively means looking for ways to invite others in conversations, meetings, email notes.

Now, you may say, "Yes, I'm left out a lot. I want to be included more frequently ... but they don't think of me." Here's the trick! You have more influence than you think.

If you're not included, "speak up"; ask for information!

From personal experience, I can tell you that my boss years ago was surprised that I wanted to be included more ... in email notices, etc. She was happy to do it, once she realized she was inadvertently being exclusive.

Then, when you get information, keep inclusiveness going ... Pass It On to others!

Effective communication means including everyone. It is a "bringing in" activity rather than "shutting out." By including people, we foster a sense of respect, belonging and allow more accurate information to be shared.
