WORD / Google Docs - The Secret to Resizing Shapes and Objects

Have you ever tried to "re-size" an object (shape, photo, text box) and ended up with a distorted image?



For instance, when you insert a circle and drag the corner to make it larger, it turns into an oval.



Well, there's an easy trick to use so that your object will retain its original proportions.




WORD - Re-Size with the SHIFT Key


Normally when you re-size a shape or image, you grab one of the corners or side re-sizing handles and drag it to a larger (or smaller) size. If you find that the object becomes distorted, use this trick instead:


1.  Click on the object and hold the SHIFT key down.
2.  Now click on one of the four corners (not the side) of the box around the shape and drag the mouse (larger or smaller) until it is the size you want.



The shape or image will move proportionally and you will have an object that is not distorted.

The Same is True for Circles

When you're working with circles and you want them larger (or smaller) ... just dragging a corner will typically end up in an oval.



So here's what you do! Even when you're dragging, just press the SHIFT key and the circle automatically pops back into the correct, perfectly round shape.



TIP: Remember two things: 1) You are clicking one of the box points, and 2) you must hold the SHIFT key to ensure the enlargement is in the same proportions.




Use this Trick in Google Docs Too


You can use this same process in a Google Doc when you're working with Shapes as well.


·     When you're in the Drawing tool and have a shape you want to re-ze, click on it to select the shape and hold the SHIFT key down.


·     Now click on one of the four corners (not the side) of the box around the shape and drag the mouse (larger or smaller) until it is the size you want.

Be Personal



If there is one thing you can do when speaking or presenting to a group to keep your audience's attention, to help them understand your message, to buy-in to what you want them to know or do ... it is to be personal.



We're not talking about being personable ... but that's certainly part of it.



Bring yourself to the podium, stage or front of the room. Use first-person pronouns (I, my, we, our). Tell a personal experience, feeling or story.



Let the audience see that you are a real person who is sharing information. This comes across as sincere and makes you more believable ... more trustworthy.

Communicate Inclusively



Have you ever thought about why and when you exclude some people when sharing information? Is it intentional and for good reason? Or is it because you just didn't think of it?



Here are some reasons that may have crossed your mind and interfered with being inclusive with your communications.


·     You can't include everyone, right?
·     You're too busy.
·     There's not enough time.
·     They don't need to know.
·     You just didn't think of it.



So who do you leave out ... and what are the reasons for not sharing your ideas, giving your rationale for a decision, or soliciting new solutions?



Who could give you unique insight and pose new ideas if only asked?



Look around you and see if there are opportunities for more inclusion in communicating.



Having people left in the cold is detrimental to work situations. You end up with so many missed ideas, a lot of disengagement, and apathy.



Keep the vitality of your workplace by thinking inclusively as much as you can!
