Internet – Stop Data Breach Warnings When Logging Into Tech-Talk

Intermediate

One day last week we were surprised to get an email from one of our subscribers asking about a warning that was popping up when users signed into Tech-Talk.

The message was pretty scary! "The password you just used was found in a data breach." "We recommend changing the password."

We investigated. We talked with Google. We discovered what is going on, why it is happening, and what you can do. We'll walk you through all the steps below to make the warning for Tech-Talk stop.

Why? Because there is no problem with Tech-Talk whatsoever. There is no data breach because we don't have any of your data! Logging into Tech-Talk is perfectly safe. There is no need to change the password ... nor can you! It's one username and password for everyone in the organization that is providing Tech-Talk to you.

In the Big Picture

What is happening is pretty simple. It's all done to keep you secure. Let me give you an overview before we go into the details.

#1: There are multiple internet password managers ... one for each browser that you may use. (The "Big 3" are Google's Chrome, Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's Edge).

NOTE: The default for each password manager feature is ON. You know it's ON if you get pop-ups asking if you want to save a password. If you don't want that tool you can turn the feature OFF. (Go to Settings, Autofill, Password Manager: Then toggle off: "Offer to Save Passwords")

#2: You get a warning about the password being found in a data breach. This can happen for perfectly secure pages like Tech-Talk.com. The pop-up is triggered by multiple people using the same username and password such as Tech-Talk.com. Or it could be that you need to tell the password manager that the info for Tech-Talk is safe.

#3. If you trust a site (e.g. Tech-Talk), how do you stop the pop-up? You simply dismiss the warning for that specific web address. TIP: You must say yes to saving the password for that URL first. Then you go into Settings and "Dismiss the Warning". (See steps below.) You do this for each website login that you trust.

How to "Dismiss" the Password Manager Warning in Google

Remember, these warnings are only triggered if you have the Google Password Manager turned ON. So, if you do want to keep using the tool, but you don't want the warnings for an individual website, these instructions will show you what to do.

1. In the Chrome Internet Browser, click on the three vertical dots in the top right and choose Settings.

[Google password]

2. In the left navigation column, click on Autofill and then select Password Manager in the next screen. *

[password manager]

IMPORTANT NOTE: In the image above with the red box, under the words "Password Manager" you see "1 compromised password". You ONLY get these words after you have initially SAVED the password when asked.

If you haven't done this, there is nothing to fix. If the URL hasn't been saved as an OK password in your list, you can't turn off the warning. Go back and try to log in again. This time say OK to the password when asked. (See steps below.)

3. Click on the arrow to the right of the Check password warning.

[password warning]

4. Then, to the right of the blue Change Password button, click the 3 vertical dots.

[settings]

5. And finally, select Dismiss warning.

[dismiss warning]

This turns off the warning for that ONE specific website.

How to Save the Password in Google

You have to save the password in the password manager first before you can dismiss the warning. That makes sense, right? Here's how:

[Google password manager]

· Log out of the site where you received a warning (if you are still logged in).

· Log back into the website.

· When the warning appears, click the OK button.

· Then click the Save button to ADD it to your Password Manager.

· Now you can go to the steps above to dismiss the warning in the future.

· A HEADS-UP: You may need to be patient. It takes time for the saved password to populate on the internet. You will need to wait a few minutes (sometimes overnight) so that the password will show as "compromised" in your list. Occasionally you can refresh your browser after 3-5 minutes and you'll get the option to dismiss the warning.

Remember, only follow these steps if you know that your login credentials are safe, as they are with Tech-Talk.

How to "Ignore" a Password Warning in Edge

Just as Chrome does, the Microsoft Edge browser watches for "leaked" passwords and will alert you with a pop-up if any of your saved passwords are detected.

Of course, you want to take any warnings that you receive seriously and only disable one that you are sure is legitimate.

NOTE: To receive notifications, you would need to have the password manager as well as the "Show alerts when passwords are found in an online leak" toggled ON.

So, if you want to keep the password in your manager, but turn off a warning that you receive:

· When you're signed into your Microsoft account and in an open Edge browser, click on the three horizontal dots in the upper right and choose Settings.

· In the left menu click on Profiles, and then select Passwords from the "Your Profile" list.

· Any leaked passwords will show in a warning in the Show alerts when passwords are found in an online leak section. Click on the arrow beside it.

[leaked password]

· If you want to dismiss the warning for an entry in the list of compromised passwords, select Ignore. Password Monitor adds the passwords to a list of ignored alerts.

[ignore]

Password Manager Alerts in Mozilla Firefox

The Firefox Password Manager will also show alerts if a login has been potentially exposed to a data breach. However, at this time there is no way to turn off a warning for a single website. If you're using this tool for your password manager, it's safer to leave the alerts turned on.

Communications: Listening

First, listen to understand

[Editor's Note: This tip is one of our all-time favorites. It works!]

If you've ever been given a compliment, you know how great that makes you feel. However, here's a clever phrase that will give you even greater insight and even more joy.

No matter what you think the compliment meant (or why it was said) when you first say "thank you" and follow it with an ever-so-slight pause and the words (casually said) "What makes you say that?" -- you'll be guaranteed to hear specifics that will make you smile and give you much better information.

For example, if at work, your boss says, "Great job". You're pleased. But you don't know what caused them to make that declaration. You may have thought it was because you were on time and presented thorough information. They may have been really impressed with the insight you came up with. You'll never know unless you ask.

This phrase (Thank you ... what makes you say that?) will enlighten you every time.

These words also work wonders in any discussion. If you want someone to open up about what they are really thinking, try (in a gentle way) saying, "What makes you say that?"

Leadership

Look to the root cause

You know that we write new articles each week and send them out to you, right? That's 52 mailings a year so it stands to reason, we're going to make a mistake now and then, wouldn't you agree?

For instance, one time we put the wrong logo into the top banner (oops!). That's not good. So you might think we would find out who is responsible and ask them to be more careful.

Surprise! That's not the best solution.

What if the issue were much bigger? Perhaps it was lost files, a dissatisfied customer or an unnecessary expense. It would be so easy (and human) to blame the person who "caused" the problem.

But if you don't want it to happen again ... blame the process. And then fix it!

Examine the situation and figure out how you can adjust the underlying process to give you greater comfort in its reliability.

People will make mistakes. It's human nature, so beef up the process to alleviate future problems. In our logo case, we changed the order in which we produced the co-branded banners, reducing the likelihood of making this same mistake again.
