Hello public library workers,
I'm forwarding the survey below from a researcher at Portland State University. They are investigating map designs and would like feedback from those of you who provide reference services at your library.
Cheers!

Calling all public library workers who help patrons answer reference questions!

My name is Lauren McKinney-Wise and I am a Geography graduate student at Portland State University. I am reaching out to you as a public library worker for your assistance on my thesis project which is focused on maps and cartography. You are an ideal candidate for this research as you support patrons on a variety of topics - including maps.

In this two-phase study, I am investigating kernel density heat map design<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdesktop.arcgis.com%2Fen%2Farcmap%2F10.3%2Ftools%2Fspatial-analyst-toolbox%2Fkernel-density.htm&data=05%7C01%7CRoss.FUQUA%40slo.oregon.gov%7C9aa20c540573433efa6108dad18d36b9%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638052701685773000%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=HyRoPejw8oyKBBkAKpPsCHvwlA05pie0LH0xXAMPwJs%3D&reserved=0> and how certain design principles can improve their readability and effectiveness. For phase one, I worked with leading professional map makers to develop clearer design guidelines for kernel density heat maps, and now, for phase two, I am testing those guidelines and I need your expert input.

This involves a short survey where you will be presented with six different maps, each with a set of accompanying questions. It is designed to investigate if certain design variables improve the map's ability to convey geographic information.

Please help me continue my research by taking this short survey and sharing it, widely, with other reference desk colleagues. The survey is open to all public library reference staff who assist patrons

The survey should take between 10-15 minutes.
