Hi all,

I hope you're well! And, am wondering if there have been any reported threats against libraries or library staff in Oregon? While I'm grateful that ALA is approaching government officials about this issue, I am distressed that this work is needed.

Take good care out there!
Kristy

PPT/G-Slides ? Lock Objects So You Don?t Move Them Accidentally

 Intermediate

[PPT example]

I was working on a PowerPoint presentation and had multiple objects on one slide... a few text boxes, a background image, and a shape. As I was adding and rearranging the layered items on the slide, I kept moving the wrong box over and over. Because of the overlapping objects, it made it hard to tweak the one that I wanted.

Then I learned about a new feature built into PowerPoint 365 or version 2021 (and newer) that lets you "lock" objects to keep them in place. This means when you position a text box, image, or shape on a slide, you can make it stay there so that you can't accidentally move or resize it.

What kind of objects can you lock in PowerPoint?

? Text and title Boxes
? Pictures, images, icons
? Shapes and SmartArt
? Videos
? Tables and graphs

You can essentially "lock" any item that you add to a slide so that it can't be moved or re-sized unless you unlock it. This is especially helpful when you have a background image that fills a slide and you add text boxes or shapes on top of it.

If you're a Google Slides user, currently there is not an option to lock individual objects or photos, but see a few helpful workarounds at the end of this article.

Lock Objects in PowerPoint

You have choices. There are two ways to lock a text box, shape or image.

1. Select and Right-Click

? Select the object.
? Or, if you have multiple items, select them all by clicking on one, holding down the Shift key, and clicking the others.
? Right-click and choose Lock.

[lock object]

2. Selection Window

? Select the item you want to lock.
? When you do this, an option in the ribbon will be available called Shape Format. Select that and then click Selection Pane (in the Arrange section) to turn it on.
? In the Selection panel, click the Lock icon(s) to the right of the object name(s).

[lock objects]

Now the objects won't move, even if clicked on.

To Unlock them:

? Select the object(s), right-click and choose Unlock.
? Or, return to the Shape Format Selection pane and click the lock icon to unlock.

Google Slide Lock Options

At this time, you CAN'T lock objects in a Google Slide presentation as with PowerPoint. But we did find a few workarounds so that when you're handling many items on a slide you can prevent moving them accidentally.

Use a Slide Background

If you've selected an image to fill the background of a slide... and then you want to layer objects and text boxes on top of it, you have probably experienced grabbing and moving the background image accidentally. Here's a fix. Instead of inserting an image to fill up the slide, use the "Slide background" option.

1. Click on your slide and go to Slide, then select Change Background.

[change background]

2. Then, click the Choose image button and navigate to the picture you want to use.

[change image]

Now the image will be placed in the background of that slide and you can't accidentally move it.

Lock Aspect Ratio

This trick won't prevent you from moving an image, shape or text box around on the slide, but it will keep the dimensions intact -- which can be helpful.

To lock the size/shape of a text box, shape or image:

? Select the object and under Format in the ribbon, choose Format options.
? In the window that opens on the right, in the Size group, check the Lock aspect ratio box.

Although you CAN move the object, the size will stay intact.

Communications: Punctuation

Scare quotes

Have you ever seen writing where authors put quotes around a word or two they want to distance themselves from? Or perhaps they apply the technique to indicate the term is being used in a non-standard or slang way. Sometimes these quotes can express disapproval over how a word is typically viewed.

Here are some examples:

? The article was written by a "professional" writer.
? He simply went "bonkers" over the idea.
? Many "experts" have been known to give bad advice.

In Tech-Talk, we often use these "scare quotes" to bring attention to the term so that you won't gloss over it. This technique can help the reader understand the main point more quickly.

Scare quotes are sort of like air quotes, and if you know anything about air quotes, you know that they should be used in moderation. The same applies to scare quotes.

NOTE: When you're using this technique and the word in scare quotes is at the end of a sentence, be sure to finish the quote before the final punctuation. (That's different from a quoted sentence where the " sign goes last.)

Just because you're here, doesn't mean you're "ready"!

Leadership: Fun Way to Build Team Spirit

As you well know, your team is made up of individuals, each of whom needs to be recognized periodically for their contributions to the success of the organization.

That doesn't mean that you, as a manager or supervisor, have to do all the thanking and applauding. You can turn this into a team activity. It's fast and easy. The result is that everyone gets a warm feeling about themselves and a positive understanding of their place in the group.

Team Building Activity

Have all the team members sit in a circle. Take a big ball of yarn and wrap one end around your finger. Throw the ball to another team member and thank that person for a specific contribution or accomplishment. That team member then wraps a bit of yarn around their finger and continues the process. You can even send it back to the same person! Watch the interconnected web the team weaves!

Subject: [Libs-Or] ALA Condemns Threats of Violence in Libraries

The past months have seen threats directed to public and school libraries and library workers, including the forced temporary closure of five metropolitan libraries due to bomb and shooting threats.

Today, the executive board of the American Library Association (ALA) transmitted a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray expressing our concerns about the threats directed to public and school libraries and library workers. According to library directors and local officials, there is no evidence at this time showing a direct connection between last week's threats and opposition to library materials and programs. However, our letter to Director Wray does underscore the increasing threats of violence to libraries and library workers nationwide.

The safety of our members is our utmost priority. We encourage directors, supervisors and managers to review your institution's safety procedures with all staff so that everyone knows how to respond if they receive a threat or are threatened directly. In addition to notifying local law enforcement, we suggest you file a report with the FBI (
https://tips.fbi.gov/) and then to notify ALA at notify at ala.org. We also recommend that institutions review their protocols for responding to the media in the event of such emergencies.

We, your colleagues and representatives on the ALA Board, are inspired by the work you are doing in these difficult times. An attack on any library or library worker is an attack on our profession. Know that your professional association stands behind you and is addressing our shared concerns with federal law enforcement.

We received a very similar request at Driftwood this week! Interesting to know that it?s not just us. Hobbes responded with some options for purchasing a library card, but I don?t believe we?ve heard back.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else received this request?

Can I please have a library card if I live in England?
It's impossible for me to come in person to apply for it.
My interest lies in audiobooks and ebooks mainly. I have never lived in the library's state before.

Thank you.

We offer a digital card option that people can purchase for $5/month.
People can purchase it from any location, but it is intended to primarily serve people in our vicinity who are outside of our service area.
