WORD/PPT - Expanded Text Spacing for a Better Design

I saw an image the other day and loved how the text in the bottom line was stretched so that it matched the width of the line above it – as in the image to the right.
When you adjust the spacing between characters, it is referred to as "kerning." It's used to create a more visually balanced and aesthetically pleasing design with text. By adjusting the space between letters, you can ensure that the overall shape of words and sentences looks cohesive.
Well, you don't need to be a graphics designer using special software to achieve this look. When working in Word or PowerPoint you can use this special character spacing feature to evenly separate each letter to fill the width of your title area giving it a polished look.
When you have a defined space that you want to fill with text, in addition to changing the font size, consider adjusting the "character spacing" so that it fills the area you want. This way you can change the distance just slightly -- or a whole lot -- by adjusting the points between each letter evenly.
This is a great feature to use in your documents for an added "designer" effect in:
· Headings and Titles
· Subheadings
· Within objects and images

Remember, we're not talking about line spacing, but the distance between letters, numbers, or characters in the same line.
NOTE: The expanded character spacing option is available in the desktop versions of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. However, at this time you can't find it in the online version of Microsoft 365 ... nor in Google Docs or Slides.
Adjust the Character Spacing in Desktop Word or PowerPoint
NOTE: Use this technique carefully and sparingly. Not every font looks good with this type of spacing so try different font styles.
To adjust the amount of space between text or characters in your document:
· In your Document or Slide, type the text and then highlight it.
· On the Home tab, in the Font section, expand the section by clicking on the downward arrow in the lower right section (or right-click and select Font).

· On the Advanced tab, under Character Spacing, use the drop-down menu under the Spacing option to change from Normal to Expanded.
· Next, you can adjust the number of points between each space. TIP: A point is a unit of measurement for depth of printing. There are approximately 72 points in one inch.

Play around with the number of points until you have the needed space between each letter that looks right to you.

5 Effective Ways to Greet People
Having recently moved to Colorado Springs, one of the first things I did was sign up for a library card. It was great to have a friendly face cheerfully explain all the benefits and features of my new account.
Then two weeks later, the excellent customer service continued. I went to pick up a book on Access (for my March webinar). I walked into the building and was immediately greeted with a beautiful smile, eyes connecting with mine, and a friendly welcome. I knew it was sincere. I felt wonderful.
Here are five things you can do to ensure you're offering top-notch customer service.
#1: A Warm Welcome
Start by greeting customers with a warm and genuine smile. Make eye contact and use a friendly tone of voice. A simple, "Welcome! We're delighted to have you here today," can set a positive tone for the entire interaction.
#2: Personalized Greetings
Whenever possible, try to personalize your greetings. If you know the patron's name or have any information about their preferences, use it to make the greeting more personal. For example, "Welcome back, [Name]! How was your last visit?"
#3: Express Genuine Interest
Show genuine interest in the patrons by asking open-ended questions about their day or their experience. For example, "How has your day been so far?" or "Is there anything specific you're looking for today?" This not only demonstrates friendliness but also signals a willingness to assist.
#4: Offer Assistance Proactively
Be proactive in offering assistance. Let customers know that you are there to help and answer any questions they may have. For instance, "If you need any assistance or have questions, feel free to ask. We're here to make your experience enjoyable."
#5: Thank Them for Their Patronage
Express gratitude for the customer choosing your establishment. A simple "Thank you for visiting us today" or "We appreciate your patronage" goes a long way in making them feel valued and welcomed.
Remember, the key to friendly customer service is authenticity. Sincerity in your greetings and a willingness to assist can significantly enhance the overall customer experience.
