perspective and k-12 general Oregon tribes books

Hello Pia,

I wanted to reach out to you and the entire library community. My name is
Jennifer Belle and I work in the Office of Indian Education at ODE. I would
be happy to discuss this and any subject with you anytime. Part of my tasks
have been to build a booklist that can be paired with TH/SH curriculum or
read by any age group. I have also worked with Cheyanne Heidt, the
Curriculum Specialist at Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and she has a
great recommended reading list at the following link:
https://www.grandronde.org/history-culture/culture/curriculum/other-resources/
I will warn it is difficult to open because of the format, something we are
hoping to update this year.

Native communities are very much alive and in the present, with over 55,000
Native students being served in the state of Oregon. We have learned that
Oregon is leading the country in Native student support and representation
and we are currently working to update the country's only active Student
Success Plan that specifically addresses Native American and Tribal
implemented criteria in education.

In the past year our office has grown from 2 people to 7, so we are growing
rapidly. This leaves us free to help the education community. April
Campbell is an Assistant Superintendent at ODE and the Director of the
Office of Indian Education, and she is a member of the Confederated Tribes
of Grand Ronde. SB 13 and Tribal History Shared History is run by Brent
Spencer, who is a member of the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla, and he is
responsible for organizing and implementing Tribal-approved curriculum.
Please feel free to reach out to me and I can talk about your needs with my
team. There are so many wonderful resources we have gathered. Our mission
is to provide access to authentic Native American history and culture in
schools and to support the needs of every Native student and family.

Thank you for posting on this subject. I am so excited to share what we do
and I will help post to the library community anything that will help
educate students and educators in authentic and current Native American
information. All state departments have an embedded librarian through the
state library and the state librarian who works with ODE is Natalie Brandt,
who is amazing and loves collaboration, so she could be a wonderful
resource as well. We work with her often. Our mission can only be a success
with the help and interest of Oregon educators. My signature below contains
a direct link to our website. Our office supplies a monthly Newsletter you
can sign up for on our resources page. We also have monthly office hours
open to the community to meet our team and ask questions. You can find the
link below my signature. These are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at
1:30 PM. ***FYI, that is tomorrow!!!*** Spread the word about what we do,
we are here for everybody.

Be well and safe,

Jennifer S. Belle (she, her, hers)

Dear Collective Brain,

We have a 4th grade teacher in one of our elementary schools looking for a
read aloud about the Oregon Trail that includes the Settler's perspective
and the Native American perspective. Does anyone have any ideas for titles
to recommend to them?

I also thought that I can benefit from the answers received from this
listserv and broad your suggestions to books k-12 from authors and
perspectives of our Oregon tribes, whether they are fiction or nonfiction.
I checked ODE lesson plans and resources for SB13 Tribal History/Shared
History: Social
<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/socialsciences/Pages/SB13_SocialSciences.aspx>
Sciences
<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/socialsciences/Pages/SB13_SocialSciences.aspx>
and
the Oregon American Indian, Alaska Native and Hawaiian Native Education
<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/equity/NativeAmericanEducation/Pages/default.aspx>
site with not too much success.

I will collect the answers I receive and provide a list for everyone, if I
get significant responses.

Any suggestion will be very appreciated.

Thank you!

Pia
