INTERNET - Goodbye to Internet Explorer – What You Need to Know if You Still Have It
Novice
[Goodbye IE]
It's hard to believe that in 2003 about 95% of computer users were using Internet Explorer (IE) as the preferred browser to get to the web.
However, with the popularity and features of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Apple's Safari, "IE" quickly slid out of site.
To regain usage, Microsoft revamped and launched the "Edge" browser in 2015 and began phasing out Internet Explorer. It was officially retired in June of 2022 and, as of February 14, 2023, it has been permanently disabled. (NOTE: Any software that is no longer being supported is a security risk to you, so delete it.)
So, what does this mean to you?
1. You DON'T have Internet Explorer (IE) installed on any of your computers.
Most likely if you have a desktop computer purchased in 2015 and after that has Windows 10 (or 11) installed, it came with Microsoft's browser replacement, Edge. So there's nothing for you to do.
2. You HAVE Internet Explorer installed on your computer.
If you're still pounding away on an older desk or laptop computer that has a version of Internet Explorer installed, you may already have received a notification from Microsoft to upgrade to Edge.
Microsoft says:
You will see a dialogue box when you are transitioned to Microsoft Edge. When you try to click any Internet Explorer (IE) icons or other entry points, you will be redirected to Edge. Your browsing data is automatically brought over to Microsoft Edge from IE so you can seamlessly continue browsing.
So... if you've made the update, you're golden!
Now, if you still have a version of Internet Explorer on a device it will no longer be receiving updates and in turn, will be highly vulnerable to security breaches. You should delete it from your computer IMMEDIATELY.
To manually delete the app from your device:
· In the search bar type Apps and click on Apps & Features
· Scroll through the list of programs until you find Microsoft Explorer.
· Click on the program name and select Uninstall.
[uninstall IE]
Install Edge
If you don't have a version of Microsoft Edge on your computer, you can install it for free. To get a copy, go here: Microsoft Edge<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001uWqWm0ppUdtW2QPXNXmLCgN-1oBclN7qRJAtHhbFpwhVl8neOquGdTiBBoYm5-OIM6QqT8UQKcbXiPU1hx3ondnF4WnXbMb0j5wkr9VXy1nrhwILgB7WuT8CRwYQir3jFCMunk-Jm0WrgxCXtdXjIBc7wmKldeu0%26c%3DPutnOtABwl3AK0W86G8Q76Cw6RJEKWFZn0-lQ1Fqf2sbH-n_M5IgQQ%3D%3D%26ch%3DDNJgPluH1Xo6ZDzGFxVrw9A3R1h0KKotEMkCHYmlasGxFp8wsYet7w%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C9348bde534bc4ec853f908db19d1313c%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638132158798925436%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=0%2B4jS0BxwiampFaPf94liWi70dv62zvlh0gaZfjgyGg%3D&reserved=0>.

Communications: Talking
Dealing with a constant complainer
Have you ever been around someone who is constantly complaining? That can be draining, right? It is hard to listen to all that negativity without being able to do something about it.
Here's one technique we've talked about before that can be modified and used in this type of situation: it's called the "Meat Story". (Read this Tech-Talk article<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001uWqWm0ppUdtW2QPXNXmLCgN-1oBclN7qRJAtHhbFpwhVl8neOquGdV3j1wn7Br31RSQUVWQxxsn8e_uHdf89hfNYGXyBwWZxqijEs6U2A2pDH1dwZuQQeptnSRQcC-GiZfMf1QYfXelub2aA2YIfXk6OoG-FI7Xi5cDqcp_g8jKV4r3kMLzKYqlx1s6tSrSgAnVgrFkzVf4%3D%26c%3DPutnOtABwl3AK0W86G8Q76Cw6RJEKWFZn0-lQ1Fqf2sbH-n_M5IgQQ%3D%3D%26ch%3DDNJgPluH1Xo6ZDzGFxVrw9A3R1h0KKotEMkCHYmlasGxFp8wsYet7w%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C9348bde534bc4ec853f908db19d1313c%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638132158798925436%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=xRebHwMkj2ylxeYW2vCjqj9WrQM9C2u5Ti2liyxweDE%3D&reserved=0>!)
Simply put, you repeat the problem and what you want to happen ... in a firm, kind, non-emotional way ... over and over and over again (until they get it)!
Examples of responding when someone complains:
· "Complaints not accepted today; just solutions."
· "That's a complaint. Turn it into a suggestion."
· "Complaining doesn't get us anywhere. What can you do to fix the situation?"
Clearly, the tone and words you choose will depend on your relationship with the complainer ... are you a colleague, a friend, or a manager?
Yes, you can add a few softening or warm-up words, but the power of the Meat Story is the repetition of the issue followed by what you want to happen ... without getting side-tracked by other thoughts that the complainer may raise.
Just keep repeating, your "meat story<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001uWqWm0ppUdtW2QPXNXmLCgN-1oBclN7qRJAtHhbFpwhVl8neOquGdV3j1wn7Br31RSQUVWQxxsn8e_uHdf89hfNYGXyBwWZxqijEs6U2A2pDH1dwZuQQeptnSRQcC-GiZfMf1QYfXelub2aA2YIfXk6OoG-FI7Xi5cDqcp_g8jKV4r3kMLzKYqlx1s6tSrSgAnVgrFkzVf4%3D%26c%3DPutnOtABwl3AK0W86G8Q76Cw6RJEKWFZn0-lQ1Fqf2sbH-n_M5IgQQ%3D%3D%26ch%3DDNJgPluH1Xo6ZDzGFxVrw9A3R1h0KKotEMkCHYmlasGxFp8wsYet7w%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C9348bde534bc4ec853f908db19d1313c%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638132158798925436%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=xRebHwMkj2ylxeYW2vCjqj9WrQM9C2u5Ti2liyxweDE%3D&reserved=0>."

Leadership
Get quiet people to speak up
If you're holding a staff meeting, I bet you like it better when folks speak up, right? You want to get valuable feedback on the issues presented. You'd like additional ideas on proposed projects.
In every group setting (even just two or three people), you'll find some quiet individuals. These folks don't readily offer up their thoughts. They may be busy processing the ideas in their heads, they could be shy, or they may think that their thoughts aren't that important.
No matter what the reason for being quiet is, there are times when you want to hear from everyone. You need to know that everyone is on board or has contributed their opinion. You want each individual to feel valued and engaged.
Here's one trick for getting people to speak up: ask the quiet individual an open-ended question ... in a safe way ... so that they can easily answer without feeling as if they are being put on the spot.
Typical things people say that are not as effective:
· "Judy, what do you think about this?" (Yes, the question is open-ended, but the word "think" makes people's brain freeze up. You may get a blank stare.)
· "Do you like this idea?" (It's not open-ended, so a simple yes or no may be your answer, offering no real insight.)
Better ways to get engagement ... and discover new perspectives:
· "Judy, we haven't heard from you on this. How do you feel about it?" (You've expressed the assumption that you want to hear from each person. And you substituted the word "feel" for "think". The brain can much more easily respond to "how do you feel about" vs "what do you think about".)
· "Judy, do you have any comments on this topic?" (Somewhat open-ended, using the person's name, showing that you want to hear from the individual. This is a way to carve out a spot so the quiet person doesn't have to interrupt the talkers.)
· Even better: "Judy, what comments do you have on this topic?" (There's no easy way for her to say "no," she has nothing to say. It assumes Judy will come up with something that the team will value. Now is the time to say it.)
