Hello all!

I want to bring your attention to an opportunity to engage with Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects in April to improve book coverage. Quality coverage of books is especially important during this period of unprecedented book challenges in the United States. Wikipedia pages about challenged books are viewed hundreds to thousands of times daily in English Wikipedia. For example, in the last 20 days, Gender Queer<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_Queer> has been viewed 13,000 times, Lawn Boy<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn_Boy_(Evison_novel)> 4,000 times, The Hate U Give<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hate_U_Give> 10,000 times, and All American Boys<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_American_Boys> 2,000 times.

April 1 marks the launch of the first #EveryBookItsReader campaign<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/03/07/introducing-everybookitsreader-a-new-wikimedia-campaign/>. Currently, events are planned in Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the US, Spain, Italy, Romania, Nigeria, and Uganda. You can find more information on the main page<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EveryBooksItsReader_2023> for the campaign – just follow the language links at the top of the page and choose “Activities”.

If you are interested in participating, here are some events that may interest Oregonians!

Event: Wikidata + Books with Silvia Gutiérrez of the Wikimedia Foundation
Location: Online, Zoom
Date: March 30, 2023
Time: 8 am, Pacific Time (Event will be recorded and shared)
Registration: Required. bit.ly/EveryBk
Summary: In this workshop, you will learn how to add books (and "written works") to Wikidata and why that matters. We will squeeze the power of linked data by learning how to query it and how to add what's missing. We will ask Wikidata about female writers who have won literary prizes and filter the data by country, date, etc. Further, we will see if their work can be read for free now on Wikisource! And what's even better: we'll learn how to contribute to the world's largest collaborative knowledge database.

Event: Edit Wikipedia with Annie Rauwerda (Depths of Wikipedia<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depths_of_Wikipedia>)
Location: Online, Zoom
Date: April 5th
Time: Noon, Pacific Time
Registration: Required. bit.ly/DepthsofWikipedia
Summary: Join Annie Rauwerda and two librarians (Laurie Bridges and Diana Park) as Annie edits a book article. This livestream event is sure to be filled with laughter and entertainment. This will be Annie’s first time editing a book page and probably her first time doing a live event with librarians.

Event: Editing for Equity: Adding BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) authored books to Wikipedia
Location: Oregon State University Valley Library (Contact Laurie Bridges or Diana Park for more information)
Date: April 21
Time: 1:00 – 4:00 Pacific Time
Registration: Required, limited to 40.<https://guides.library.oregonstate.edu/books>
Note: If you’re new to Wikipedia, Laurie & Diana will offer introductory training via Zoom. Laurie on April 7 at 1:00, Diana TBD. Register for training<https://guides.library.oregonstate.edu/books> (midway down the page).

This week The Wikipedia Library<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library> negotiated free access to the Perlego ebook platform for any participant in the campaign; temporary access will last through May 31. You can register for Perlego’s temporary access via this link.<https://www.perlego.com/group-register?orgt1=384C8/5ak7tyqWJ4f2etBA==&regcode=8BPZ1J>
Process:

  1. Register for a Perlego account.
  2. Read a book.
  3. Create or improve the Wikipedia article about the book.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the events or if your library is interested in participating.

Thank you for reading to the bottom of this email! Laurie
