Hello, Oregon Library Community,
The Public Library Standards Committee, a committee of the Public Library Division, wants your input during two community online events coming on Tuesday, November 7 and Friday, November 17.
BACKGROUND
The Public Library Standards<https://www.olaweb.org/pld-standards> are intended to be a relevant and useful tool for maintaining quality services and facilities, explaining library needs to voters and elected officials, and helping guide library directors and managers in development, strategic planning, and decision making. By meeting these standards, a library establishes a baseline from which it can strive for excellence.
The first version of the Standards was developed in 2013 and underwent a major revision in 2018 and the current version was last revised in 2021. The Standards Committee, a volunteer group of library professionals from small, medium, and large public libraries across Oregon, now reviews the document annually.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
This year, the committee is reviewing and updating the Standards to improve cultural competency and promote cultural humility in library service.
One step in our process will be hosting a second virtual community input session:
* Friday, November 17, 9:00a - 10:00a
Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86806343571?pwd=Rm1BMjdrQkJkWjlEcEovQVl4MGprZz09
At this session, we hope to intentionally engage with library workers and supporters to better understand where the existing Public Library Standards need to incorporate cultural competency and cultural humility.
Friday's session will cover four different sections of the Standards:
* Materials, Facilities, Staff, and Governance
The Standards Committee will host facilitated discussions in Zoom breakout groups, and will record the feedback we receive. This feedback will help inform our review process.
If you're not able to attend either session, there will be an open, online commenting period shortly after these sessions.
HOW YOU CAN PREPARE
Prior to the sessions, we will provide background information on the subjects of cultural competency and cultural humility to inform our discussions. We ask that attendees review any of the shared materials available from here<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1acIbsncoU2yW9XPnGVjwZ67GoxYoVEVI0F2QtgUFKvk/edit?usp=sharing> prior to attending the session(s).
