VIDEO - Using 1-3 Min. Videos to Create Multi-Purpose Tool Kits

Intermediate

[tool kits]

A few years back, one of our subscribers suggested it would be nice to have some tool kits in Tech-Talk. Yes, it would be a place where we could gather all the resources around a specific topic ... and create ways for you, the reader, to apply what you learned.

So we jumped right in and put together several mini-courses around Tech-Talk topics. We wanted them to be friendly, easy, and of course, useful! You can find them in the Learning Activities dropdown!

https://www.tech-talk.com/tool-kits<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0011zIoGUGMr0VWrnAn2lDNi-AmnJEJYflV9pO25g29rjYoFMpgQL55BKUBiS2wQ79b5iqwW1ENxQRGO3tE11Su9iyUdFycvoiOwecWTJKnQ3EW8rbO1D2kswpcElAINvQsr4a2y2T-kWpq3Osdg0h2jJnO0x-kbBOc&c=5YDvKMKwPcRcTAUWgl9wLkMzwmv2XO_06Aunq9C4DapobF3Cr_qbIw==&ch=EDsdhOUL3OH3mbLZcyQY1PUgcHgO5heDA6CY50VAcwMKN_i8_kfZfA==>

You see they are grouped into three categories and each one is a bit different ... based on the resources we had to support that topic. All include a fun trivia quiz! Here are the topics! Take a look by clicking the link above.

What is a "Tool Kit"?

A tool kit, the way we see it, is essentially a collection of resources, tools, and guidance around a single topic... much like a mini-course. You pull together whatever information and materials you want to include and present these using different technology techniques.

Here are a few suggestions for creating a tool kit, along with examples:
· A tutorial on a specific need ... "Finding What You Need in a Database"
· "How To" directions ... cataloging paperbacks
· Raising awareness ... tax preparation assistance
· Explaining programs ... getting involved as a volunteer
· Policies and procedures ... learning what is expected and allowed
· Show and tell ... demonstrating a resource and how to optimize its use
· Welcome packet ... new orientation for students, faculty, volunteers

How to Create a "Tool Kit"

Keep it simple when planning a tool kit. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Think about just three things: The topic, the three main points you want to convey, and what resources you have to support the subject.

Then, let's add some fun! How about an engaging video? For this, you might want to keep them short: 1-3 minutes.

If you have more material you want to show, create multiple videos ... breaking things up into modules.

Today's trend for learning includes short and snappy. Keep that in mind when you are planning and making your tool kit.

Create Videos with Loom.com

One of the ways to keep your videos crisp and to the point is to use LOOM.com. It's a free tool when you have videos under five minutes. You can also have up to 25 videos per person at this level.

There are three different video presentation styles with Loom.

You can have people...

[Loom]

1. Watch your computer screen and hear you talk.
[Loom]

2. Watch your computer screen and see you live, in a circle, in the corner.
[Loom]

3. See and hear you talking directly to them.

Putting It All Together

After you've created your Tool Kit, you'll want to pull all the material, resource links, and videos together on a web page or a LibGuide ... any place where you can update and add info later if needed.

Then, tell the world about it! Promote it so that people will give it a try and begin to spread the word.

Communications: Phone

Introduce yourself when calling someone

We're all getting battered with unwanted phone calls, right? People calling to sell you one thing or another. Not only is it annoying, they have a dead giveaway.

Something these callers don't do is introduce themselves ... and tell what organization they are representing. That may seem fine for them, but what it does is give us an immediate clue that the call is unwanted and not from someone with whom we are interested in speaking.

So why do I mention this?

Because several times recently, people I actually want to hear from have done the same thing!

I answer the phone. I hear, "Linda?" Is this "Linda?"

My reply is, "Who is calling, please?"

Unfortunately, this means that I have hung up on callers whom I really wanted to speak to ... because they sounded like a hack call.

Why? Because they did NOT tell me their name and their company immediately. they didn't identify themselves first thing.

Telling people who you are is polite. It's helpful to the person answering the phone. It's effective.

TIP: When calling someone you don't know, identify yourself first

before finding out if you have the right party.

EXAMPLE: "Hi, this is Linda Keefe with Tech-Talk. May I please speak with ___?"
