INTERNET – How to Add a Legacy Contact to an Account

Intermediate

Have you ever thought about how many online accounts and passwords you have? It's not uncommon for people to have 30, 40, even hundreds. From online banking to social media and document storage. There are a lot of passwords to manage!

Now, it's not an easy topic to talk about, but just as you set up a will or trust, or purchase life insurance, you want to make it easier for your loved ones to access your digital files in the event of your passing or becoming incapacitated in some way. It doesn't matter how old you are, life planning should not be put off.

Technology access is no exception.

One way to give someone you trust the ability to get to your digital accounts and stored data is to make sure they have your logins so that they can access them (or shut them down) if needed. If you use a password manager like LastPass<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0010Z4TXedDMEMVnajM4UUm560ZUulh2p527Rpj8R40hevwc1-9_WZkGks8bG7dnM2cSwMXB5MAMF_0E2XHR9LefLVlufq99-_7A5M9M9LrbY0p2V5djOR7ZDZZ_oBcD_xAaeoi1PYmYW-fILRZq0H_9Phzet7CGdgDk5V661U-aKXUI5KNd8smJ4FTCTrKAYmrx_l1EHRtQkTYtWPmYLPmgLicDl48IUMeD6wdmZCSGWU=&c=3HCwKn_NvB2hW_t0VUk5ANb8fC_7u-5cPGXL45huDPEY95M5fKfwOA==&ch=6MJZypYNBUPNFu9XrzSCyykelQCxvmL4eQ3MynHAtZFKZ_NIBXxVgw==> you only need to share one master password with a trusted individual.

[legacy contact]

Additionally, many large organizations like Apple, Google and Facebook provide a way to designate a Legacy Contact (or Google refers to this as an Inactive Account Manager).

These are trusted individuals that have been assigned in an account to manage digital data upon the owner's death.

Because some online accounts have become harder to access with multiple levels of security, having a desigated person to manage your account makes it easier during a difficult time.

Establishing a Legacy Contact

Whether you share password information or designate a Legacy Contact, here are a few things to consider:

1. Have a discussion with your preferred Legacy Contact ahead of time to make sure they understand and accept your request.
2. Some platforms let you choose multiple contacts. It's good to have a backup.
3. Review this choice periodically as sometimes personal situations (divorce, friendships falling out) can lead to changes.

Now, each platform has a different process to set up a Legacy Contact and a list of what this person can do within the account. Let's look at some of the large organizations with this option available.

Facebook

When someone passes, you can contact Facebook to have the account memorialized (preventing anyone to log into it) or deleted. Memorialized accounts are a place for friends and family to gather and share memories about the person.

[memprialize]

However, if you set up a designated Legacy Contact they have a bit more control and can do things such as…

· Write a pinned post for your profile (example: provide information about a memorial service).
· Decide who can see and who can post tributes.
· Respond to new friend requests (example: old friends or family members who weren't yet on Facebook).
· Update your profile picture and cover photo.

To designate a Facebook Legacy Contact so that some WILL have access, see the desktop instructions below (and you can view directions for all devices here<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0010Z4TXedDMEMVnajM4UUm560ZUulh2p527Rpj8R40hevwc1-9_WZkGie7zvogqV3hEBpaSD-e4Ays7F2aTDNMmS7ykyYwHBk8nYBS96_oTSBpISjVDEMl2rtMfo4aSydv0u-y_WjKdWLLqxRcs6ADQaCWfj_MVLIP4UYpkrU2OC470d_Aip4cbQ==&c=3HCwKn_NvB2hW_t0VUk5ANb8fC_7u-5cPGXL45huDPEY95M5fKfwOA==&ch=6MJZypYNBUPNFu9XrzSCyykelQCxvmL4eQ3MynHAtZFKZ_NIBXxVgw==>).

· From your main profile page, in the top right, click your profile photo.

· Select Settings & Privacy, then click Settings from the drop-down window.

[settings]
· IMPORTANT: Because Facebook is frequently moving things around, we have found the easiest way to find this option is to type "Memorialization" in the Search Settings and choose that option from the results.

[choose a legacy contact]
· A window will open with choices. Select Memorialize account and click Next.

· NOTE: The Legacy Contact must have a Facebook account. Type in a friend's name in the Search Facebook Friends box, select the person and click Save.

· In the final step, Facebook will give you the option to send a notification to your Legacy Contact.

Communication: 12 Power Words

#12: "Would you consider..?"

If you have ever wanted to ask someone to do something, and you think you might get opposition, using this word works magic:

"Consider"

It is very difficult to say no to "considering" something. (Considering opens the door to more info, more time, more ideas.)

To "consider" something doesn't cost anything and shows a willingness to cooperate. (And yet, you're not committing to doing something. You're just considering it.)

Examples:
· "We need a new chairperson for this committee. How about you?"
· "Would you consider being the new chairperson for this committee?"

· "It would be nice to have another youth program. Will you do it?"
· "It would be nice to create another youth program, will you consider doing it?"

· "I believe the way you are thinking about this new process is limiting."
· "Would you consider changing how you think about this new process?"

Sure, it you are simply assigning a task, and there is no wiggle room for accepting, asking for consideration might not be the right approach.

However, there are situations where you can start by asking someone to consider an idea, as IF they had a choice, because it is a gentler way to get them to take on the task, or to think in a new way.

"Would you consider..."
