OVERDUE: Weeding Out Oppression in Libraries, Escaping the Vocational Awe Trap w/Fobazi Ettarh<https://www.buzzsprout.com/1948067/15477729-s3-e5-escaping-the-vocational-awe-trap-w-fobazi-ettarh> (S3, E5). Produced and hosted by the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Antiracism (EDIA) Committee of the Oregon Library Association
In this episode we are joined in conversation by scholar, academic consultant, librarian and educational game designer, Fobzi Ettarh, who notably coined the concept of "vocational awe" in 2018. Ettarh shares how vocational awe operates at both the micro and macro levels, contributing to problematic hiring, onboarding, and retention practices in the library profession, and illustrates how this concept directly ties to workplace inequities and burnout. Additionally, Ettarh provides actionable ways to escape the trap of vocational awe by prioritizing mental health and rest, achieving work-life balance, reframing how we are showing up for community, and urging administrators to lead by example.

Wednesday, August 28, 12:00p PT: Library customer service and adult programs for people living with dementia<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/library-people-living-with-dementia.html?> (WebJunction)

With more than 55 million people worldwide living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and many more serving as their caregivers, it’s essential for library staff to learn how to support these community members. This webinar will offer a comprehensive overview of Alzheimer’s dementia and practical advice on meeting the needs of both those with dementia and their caregivers. We’ll cover best practices, guidelines, and actionable ideas for creating dementia-friendly services, including compassionate customer service, specialized reference resources, and engaging programming. Effective library policies are essential for setting clear expectations, defining responsibilities, and establishing boundaries for both patrons and staff. This session will cover the ten most common patron-facing policies and offer guidance on selecting and tailoring them to meet your library and community needs for safe and effective operation. Using a Code of Conduct policy as an example, we’ll discuss how to avoid policies driven by trauma or drama, ensuring they are clear, accessible, and enforceable. Additionally, we’ll explore best practices for policy management, including the importance of regular reviews by directors, boards, and staff, to maintain accountability and relevance.
