Hello everyone,
At an information session last week, folks asked if the recording could be sent out - so this is to let you know the Information Session recording is up at our Teen Internship LibGuide<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/lstagrants/teeninterns> , linked in the Timeline & Application Process. Also available is the recorded presentation of what teen interns did with libraries last year. Applications are due March 1st, please let us (Tamara Ottum or me) know if you have any questions!

Hi all,
Today is the day of the SB1583 hearing. The hearing is scheduled for
3:00p.m., so all letters and those wishing to testify need to do so an hour
before the hearing begins, 2:00p.m. or earlier.
As of this moment, there were quite a few opposed letters submitted last
night, and currently there are 318 opposed with 347 support. Now is not
the time to stop or procrastinate. If you've been waiting, now is your
time to submit testimony.
To all the brave folks who have already submitted, THANK YOU! Your letters
and offers to testify mean more than I'll even share. Thank you for your
actions, they speak so loud!
I believe in us!

Peter Coyl, all-around library rockstar, is doing a webinar next month on a topic we all care deeply about: intellectual freedom. See below for more details:
The Georgia Library Association Carterette Series Webinars presents
A Higher Purpose: Censorship and Intellectual Freedom Today
Wednesday, March 27, 2024
2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central)
Cost: Free
Description: This webinar will discuss some of the motivations behind censorship and book banning in America. We will discuss the impact of moral belief and organized thinking on efforts to remove materials from schools and public libraries, as well as historic examples of tactics being used today. We?ll also examine the difficulties in having conversations from two very drastic viewpoints and obstacles to reach a common understanding. Participants will gain a better understanding of the historic underpinnings of today?s attacks on materials related to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC experiences.
About the Presenter:
Peter Coyl is the Library Director & Chief Executive Officer of the award-winning Sacramento Public Library, the 4th largest library system in California, serving 1.4 million residents through its 28-branch system. He served as President of the Freedom to Read Foundation from 2022-2023, Vice President from 2020-2022, and a Trustee from 2019-2023. He is also a member of the California Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, the American Library Association?s Intellectual Freedom Committee, and serves on ALA Council representing the Intellectual Freedom Round Table. Coyl earned his Master?s Degree in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and his Bachelor?s Degree in Public Administration and Public Policy from Oakland University. Peter is also active in his community and sits on the Community Action Board of the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA) and is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Sacramento.

An Oregon State Legislator, Senator Fredrick from North/Northeast Portland has introduced a bill into the legislature to Ban Book Bans. The bill will be heard on Feb 13th in the afternoon and we're looking for people to testify in favor of this bill. Testifying can include speaking at the hearing on the 13th, or sending letters of support available here: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2024R1/Testimony/SED/SB/1583/0000-00-00-00-00?area=Measures<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__olis.oregonlegislature.gov_liz_2024R1_Testimony_SED_SB_1583_0000-2D00-2D00-2D00-2D00-3Farea-3DMeasures&d=DwMFaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=Eir5vNqqnbCx5LDwpleHwaBWGyhyBPwn1Lb5LWKzpBg&m=Bxc9rLovy-KRpRCCQo8X5NB9DZOeP1SRutas-HU_IeFGQaH-vPexB_7hQn8qfwgI&s=r2BdhQalvCw9LgRCEMYY_Osh1vwioXamQvXEK3EDtOE&e=>

If you have any questions or need help with talking points please reach out. The amount of time to testify is very short per person, 2 minutes.
