We're looking for someone great to be our new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant here in the Library Support division at the State Library of Oregon! This is a new position, so the successful candidate will have a great opportunity to shape new programming and services at the statewide level. The position is full-time and mostly remote, with some in-person outreach required to libraries and other organizations around Oregon. Applications are due on March 13.
This position was created at the strong recommendation of the wider Oregon library community. When we last evaluated our Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) five-year plan (basically our division's strategic plan), we heard loud and clear that several libraries would like more support to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your communities. About the position
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant provides consulting and training for libraries in Oregon on topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and antiracism; and manages and advises on a variety of DEI projects for the Library Support and Development Services division of the State Library of Oregon. The individual in this position is essential to the division's goal to help libraries break down systemic barriers - particularly in assisting libraries to better serve communities that are currently or historically underserved and under-resourced - and helping libraries become more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and antiracist organizations. The person in this position works together with the entire Library Support and Development Services division team in advancing its DEI goals. About the State Library of Oregon
The State Library of Oregon<https://www.oregon.gov/library/>, headquartered in Salem, plays a vital role in state government. It is an independent state agency governed by a nine-member Library Board appointed by the Governor under ORS 357. The mission of the State Library is to cultivate, preserve, and deliver library and information services to foster lifelong learning and community engagement. The agency operates on a biennial budget of approximately $19 million, with about 40 FTE employees.
The State Library consists of four divisions. Government Information and Library Services provides quality information services to assist state employees in the efficient performance of their jobs and in more effective decision-making for state government. Library Support and Development Services provides leadership, grants, and other assistance to improve library service for all people in Oregon. Operations provides the agency's administrative management functions such as board support, financial management, facilities management, volunteer management, information technology management, communications, and other administrative support services. The Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library is a free library for any person in Oregon with a print disability, which includes visual, physical, and reading impairments.
The person in this position will work as part of the State Library's Library Support and Development Services division<https://www.oregon.gov/library/libraries/>, which provides grants, consulting, leadership, and services to Oregon's 1,600 academic, public, school, special, and tribal libraries. The Library Support team provides planning for statewide library development; consulting on a variety of library issues; continuing education services for local library staff, patrons, and government officials; and administers all state and federal library grant programs made available by the agency. The division is primarily funded by the federal Library Services and Technology Act<https://www.imls.gov/grants/grants-state/purposes-and-priorities-lsta>, as is the position.
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism work are essential to Library Support's mission. Systemic barriers often result in poorer library service for communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, rural residents, immigrants, people with disabilities, and others. Libraries in Oregon are working to ensure that everyone in their increasingly diverse communities feel welcomed, and the Library Support division aims to assist in those efforts. That's why one of Library Support's current priorities and objectives<https://www.oregon.gov/library/libraries/Documents/LSTA/2023-2027LSTAFiveYearPlanSummary.pdf> focuses on helping Oregon libraries break down systemic barriers. Other priorities and objectives include assisting libraries to close the digital divide; supporting students, youth, and lifelong learners; building relationships to foster community; and giving libraries the training and resources they need.
Education and Experience
Required qualifications:
* A bachelor's degree in business or public administration, behavioral or social sciences, finance, political science, or any degree demonstrating the capacity for the knowledge and skills; and two years professional-level evaluative, analytical and planning work; or any combination of experience and education equivalent to five years of experience that typically supports the knowledge and skills for the classification.
Preferred qualifications:
* 3 years of experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism issues; or 3 years of experience serving culturally and/or linguistically diverse communities; or equivalent related training, education, experience, or certifications.
* Knowledge and experience of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism principles and practices.
* Knowledge and experience working with/in culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
* Familiarity, experience, and/or education with libraries.
* Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in a language commonly spoken in Oregon, other than English.
Compensation
This position is full-time, and the successful candidate will be paid at a monthly rate of $4,998 - $7,647, depending on qualifications.
