HARDWARE - Getting "Unstuck" with a Hard Reset

Intermediate

I was booting up my Dell laptop for the day and it was being sluggish. Just opening an Internet browser window took five minutes to load. Apps wouldn't open; it just seemed frozen. You've had things like that happen, right?

Yes, I remembered that a "Restart<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jyp7NJOFn9ShrqSu3TPbKGsQPyQVgW3QuTKFYU_bqyD6MrpcpTKOecqP_m7VhfWVQf84-RuoTmQezH_Nau6mZn1V13vquPUJz52z2hEezz79xZwKBIo0xTZJnp0Wek7IgLPjFipzs70oCXNYy0vbb7A3OU_ZucML3BAZkwNueSUICq70Cd5I-n7XK9vgBvFngEOY-v-EOys=&c=qlJs9j6ksz8SMhl9xsVKGdsFIuj9rR5ma_vYmkMHGvaGjDhWM4xNyw==&ch=HmUq-7QaUO01glMTgTUllWU_roCQe0-6lj8RaEgjAZcxO4T9Qi_UzQ==>" could solve many issues as it makes the computer begin again from scratch. But my issues remained. So what does one do to get unstuck?

Have you experienced issues like these:

[problem computer]
· Device does not turn on
· The operating system does not boot up
· Sluggish, lagging performance
· Cursor not moving properly
· Documents won't open
· Strange behavior in general

Well, many things can cause these types of problems. It could be an issue with Windows, a software update, or in many cases, it can be caused by a build-up of static electricity.

You see, residual or static electricity becomes stored inside your computer, and it must be released or it creates havoc.

The solution? You can perform what is referred to as a Hard Reset. NOTE: This is NOT a Factory reset which restores the device to "new-from-the-factory" condition. And yes, it is safe for you to do … on a regular basis. It does not affect your files.

A Hard Reset (sometimes referred to as a Hardware or Power Reset) can solve your issues by draining the residual power from the device and clearing information from your device's memory without harming or erasing your files. The more "technical" description of this is draining your device's motherboard capacitors.

Good news! It's not just for your PC or laptop. This technique is handy for modems, routers, and pesky streaming devices like Fire TV or Roku.

Perform a Hard Reset

Because of the buildup of static electricity, a hard reset can be done safely every month or so to keep your device running smoothly. Here are the steps:

1. Power your device down. This is not a restart, but a complete shutdown.

2. Unplug all cords going into the computer. This includes not only the power cord/AC adapter but also a mouse, monitor or printer. Or other external headphones or camera.

3. Remove any items inserted in USB ports like a jump drive or media card.

4. If possible, disconnect the battery. (On some older devices you may have to leave the battery in to do the reboot. Try it without. If the device doesn't start up, put the battery back in and follow the steps.)

[power button]

5. When everything is disconnected, press and hold the Power button for 10 -20 seconds (regardless of what the screen may be showing) which will drain any residual power from the device.

6. Release the power button.

7. Reconnect the power cord or AC adapter.

8. Press the Power button to turn the computer on. NOTE: You may be prompted to enter "Safe Mode". If so, use the arrow keys to choose "Start Windows Normally".

9. When your device completes the boot-up cycle, you can reconnect the peripherals (mouse, camera, etc.).

Hopefully, this solves your issues. If not, see this article for solutions when technology goes berserk.<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jyp7NJOFn9ShrqSu3TPbKGsQPyQVgW3QuTKFYU_bqyD6MrpcpTKOecqP_m7VhfWVQf84-RuoTmQezH_Nau6mZn1V13vquPUJz52z2hEezz79xZwKBIo0xTZJnp0Wek7IgLPjFipzs70oCXNYy0vbb7A3OU_ZucML3BAZkwNueSUICq70Cd5I-n7XK9vgBvFngEOY-v-EOys=&c=qlJs9j6ksz8SMhl9xsVKGdsFIuj9rR5ma_vYmkMHGvaGjDhWM4xNyw==&ch=HmUq-7QaUO01glMTgTUllWU_roCQe0-6lj8RaEgjAZcxO4T9Qi_UzQ==>

Communication: 12 Power Words

#5: "Because" ... followed by a Reason

Any time you ask someone for a favor, request they do something for you, or seek permission to take an action of your own ... you are vulnerable.

They may agree and give you a favorable answer or they may not. If you want to increase your chances for a positive answer, always add the word "because" and follow that with a reason (even if it's a weak one).

Examples:

· A REQUEST: "Can I check out in front of you?"
· BETTER: "Can I check out in front of you; I only have one item?"
· BEST: "Can I check out in front of you because I only have one item?"

· A REQUEST: "Can we move our meeting out?"
· BETTER: "Can we move our meeting out, so that I won't be late?"
· BEST: "Can we move our meeting out because I don't want to be late?"

Studies show that, even with a weak reason, people routinely respond more positively when the "because" word is added.

Example of a Weak Reason:
· A REQUEST: "Let's each put a $1 in the jar."
· BETTER: "Let's each put a $1 in the jar, it's important."
· BEST: "Let's each put a $1 in the jar because it is important."
