INTERNET: Passwords vs. Passkeys – Better Options in Digital Security

Intermediate

I was logging into an account the other day and saw the option to sign in with a "Passkey." I wasn’t sure what that was, or how it was different than a Password.

Well, it's a scary fact that hackers are getting more adept at gaining access to your accounts. Pair that with people being frustrated with the requirement of having to create and manage so many cryptic passwords.

You may be familiar with 2-factor authentication (2FA) that is piggy-backed with a traditional login. This requires you to not only enter your username and password, but also a second level of information like a code that is texted or emailed to you. This adds an extra step for users and can be frustrating. For example, one day I waited over 15 minutes to get a login code that was emailed to me.

To take digital security up another level from 2FA, many organizations including Amazon, Microsoft and Google are offering the option to set up and use a "Passkey" (instead of a password) when logging into your account. The goal is to eventually create a password-free future.

What is a Passkey and How Does it Work?

Essentially, a Passkey is the next step toward better digital security to access your online accounts and apps. It adds a higher level of security.

To simplify, instead of entering a username and a password, a Passkey is essentially a string of encrypted data which the user can submit with a face scan, fingerprint or Pin code to open an app, website account or access a secure network.

[passkey]

Of course, the specific use of Passkeys can vary depending on the technology or organization. For example, a face scan may be used on a mobile device, but a Pin on a laptop or desktop computer.

Using a Passkey…
1. Makes it easier to login as passwords are not required which means you have one less to remember.
2. Provides strong protection against phishing and are less susceptible to brute-force attacks (trial and error attempts to crack user login credentials).
3. Makes data breaches irrelevant as information is not stored on servers.

How Do You Start Using a Passkey?

[passkey]

1. You may be prompted when signing into an account to set up a Passkey.

For example, when logging into eBay recently I was shown this message (image to the right). I was using a laptop, so it prompted me to create a PIN number. If I were using my mobile phone that has biometric abilities, I could select to use a thumbprint or facial recognition.

NOTE: There can be options to use more than one type of Passkey on the same account.

2. You can proactively set up a Passkey with apps that offer it.

Here are links with instructions to get started using Passkeys if you're using these websites or apps:

Passkey Limitations

Passkeys are still in their early stages. One downfall is that they are not 100% supported on all of the major browsers or devices yet, but we will see wider availability as this technology is rolled out.

So in the meantime, make sure your passwords are unique and strong. Consider using a password manager like LastPass to not only create cryptic passwords but to store them safely. TIP: Use the Search option in Tech-Talk and enter "passwords" to find articles on creating strong passwords and online password managers.

Communication: 12 Power Words

#6: "So that" ... followed by a Benefit

I held a VIP training weekend for small business owners who wanted to build their companies. One of the "games" we played was called "So that".

Here's how it worked. Any time someone made a statement about what they were trying to do ... one or more of us in the group would say, "so that" ... and leave it hanging out there for the individual to fill in.

The purpose was to get everyone in the habit of not just saying stuff (which we all do, most of the time), but to finish the thought with a benefit. Why? Because it is more effective. More compelling. More persuasive.

Examples without the "so that" add-on:
· It would be better if we had more frequent story hours.
· I'd like to start a mentor program here.
· You need to show up to meetings on time.

See how more powerful these statements can be:
· It would be better if we had more frequent story hours so that the parents get in the habit of bringing their kids.
· I'd like to start a mentor program here so that new staff can thrive.
· You need to show up to meetings on time so that I don't have to fire you. (Just kidding on the benefit here, but I thought you'd like a smile.)

As a result of playing the "so that" game, everyone became highly conscious of the statements and situations that could benefit from a "so that...". We all heard this phrase said so many times over the weekend, it gently embedded the technique in our brains ... so that we could be better communicators!
