EXCEL / Google Sheets - Color-Coded Spreadsheet Tabs

Intermediate

Do you ever work in an Excel or G-Sheets workbook with a lot of worksheets in it? This makes it hard to find the individual one you're looking for, right?

Well, there's a trick that can make it easier if you're a visual person. You can "color-code" the tabs so that you can look for a familiar shade rather than read through the text.

For example, let's say you have a workbook that contains several different types of sheets – one for each department. That's a lot of tabs!

[Spreadsheet tabs labeled: Sales (blue), Marketing (red), Finance (green), and HR (purple).]

You'd have a much easier time locating the specific spreadsheet you need if each type of sheet had a different color tab. For instance, you could make Sales blue, the Marketing department red, Finance green and HR purple. Or however you associate colors and terms.

Color Code Tabs in Excel (Desktop or WEB 365)

[Menu in spreadsheet software showing "Tab Color" option, with a color palette below. A red arrow points to light blue in the Theme Colors section.]

Color coding your tabs is really easy. In your Excel spreadsheet (in either the desktop or Web 365 platform) simply:

· Right-click on the tab you want to color.

· Choose Tab Color.

· From the palette that is displayed, select the shade you'd like to apply.

A colored line will appear along the bottom edge of the tab. Once you move to another sheet in your book, the entire tab will be colored.

[Spreadsheet menu with color palette open. "Change color" option is selected, and a cursor hovers over the red color.]
Color Code Tabs in Google Sheets

It's the same process for color coding tabs in a Google Sheet.

· In the tab at the bottom of the Sheet, right-click.

· Choose Change color.

· From the palette that opens, select the color that you'd like.

Communications: Talking

"I disagree with the idea of...."

You're in a team meeting or having a cup of coffee with a friend. You're conversing about all kinds of things including ideas and opinions.

There's a good chance that some of the topics brought up may be controversial or at least not something in which you all agree.

It's so easy to get embroiled in emotions and say things that people find hurtful.

To avoid that situation, keep this mantra in mind:

Disagree with the idea, not the person!

Make it a point, with the words you choose, to communicate that while you respect and like the person, it's the opinion or thought that you do not agree with.

TIP: Make people really get it that you're targeting the idea by saying, "I disagree with the idea [thought; opinion]."

Examples:
· IDEA: "I think we should hold the company picnic on a weekday."
· BAD REPLY: "You always look for a way to get out of work."
· GOOD REPLY: "I disagree with that thought. I think we will get a better attendance if we hold it on a weekend."
