Hey Oregon libraries:
Sharing a quick alert about a free advocacy-related resource available for a limited time. Atomic Focus Films recently produced the documentary Banned Together, which focuses on book banning and community advocacy for the freedom to read. Banned Together features librarians and ALA members and staff, as well as footage of school librarians, and young activists speaking at the 2023 Rally for the Right to Read at the American Library Association Annual Conference. For a limited time, libraries can screen the documentary for free to the public. Screenings events can be sponsored by libraries or by community organizations or partners. There is a limited window for free screenings since the filmmakers are seeking to be picked up by a streaming service.
To request a free screening, fill out the form on the Banned Together website. www.bannedtogetherdoc.com/contact-8<https://www.bannedtogetherdoc.com/contact-8> They are looking for locations that can project the film onto a screen and want the chance to get feedback from attendees.
For libraries screening the documentary, it could be a good way to tee up public support for advocating for libraries—especially if there are any fall advocacy projects that libraries are building support for.
A summary of the documentary is below.
Banned Together follows three young women in Beaufort, SC during their senior year of high school as they fight to reinstate 97 books that were banned from school libraries. We witness their evolution from local to national activists as they advocate at school board meetings, sit down with national politicians, famous authors and constitutional scholars, and ultimately, speak on stage at the Right To Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago.
Thanks,
Wendy
