MOBILE - Lock Down Your Control Center

Intermediate

[A key inserted into a smartphone screen with a blurred laptop keyboard in the background]

Did you know that on both iPhones and Android devices, people can access certain settings, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode... and even smart home controls - without unlocking your phone?

Yes, this means you don't need to put in a code or use biometrics like a face ID to get to these settings.

This might be convenient for you to access certain functions quickly, but it also creates a potential privacy and security risk. For example, someone could turn off your connectivity, making it harder to track or secure your device if it's lost or stolen.

So if you're interested in enhanced privacy and security, you could restrict access to these settings. This is a one-time quick fix done by disabling this feature on your phone to prevent anyone from gaining access to the Control Center or Quick Settings while the device is locked.

iPhone Users: Disable Control Center Access from Lock Screen

To disable access to the Control Center from the lock screen on an iPhone or iPad (iOS 12 or later):

[iPhone settings screen showing Control Center access toggled OFF]
· Open the Settings app.
· Tap Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode (depending on your device).
· Enter your passcode when prompted.
· Scroll down to the section labeled Allow Access When Locked.
· Toggle OFF the switch next to Control Center.

Later, to access these settings yourself, you would need to log into your iPhone device like normal, with a pin or Face ID, to get to the Control Center.

Android Devices: Disable Quick Settings Access from the Lock Screen

NOTE: Steps may vary slightly depending on your phone model and Android version. This process works for most devices running Android 11 or later. However, based on testing, this is not an option on the Google Pixel phone at this time.

Samsung:
· Go to Settings, scroll down to find Lock screen or Lock screen and AOD.
· Select Secure lock settings.
· Put in your PIN.
· Enable Lock network and security to disable Quick Settings access.

Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO:
· Go to Settings, then Notifications and control center.
· Look for Items shown on lock screen after swiping down.
· Then Disable Control Center.

Again, depending on your device, model and version, the steps may vary.

After this, anyone trying to swipe down from the top of your screen while the phone is locked will not be able to access Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other controls. You'll need to unlock your phone with your PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition before making changes.

Bottom line: If you want more privacy, this is a small but powerful tweak that can help keep your phone - and your information - more secure.

Communications: Listening

Ask, "If you DID know ..."

Getting to the root of someone's problem is not always simple. If you're helping a friend or colleague think through what's really going on with them there is one question that works wonders.

It's "If you DID know, what would it be?" It breaks through reluctance and frees up inner knowledge.

How do you use this question?

Whenever someone tells you, "I don't know", you can say (firmly, but kindly), "If you did know, what would it be?"

Yes, they may look at you like you're crazy. Or they may say again, "I don't know". You just repeat, "OK, but if you DID know, what would it be?"

Here's a scenario that will give you ideas for the situations you could find yourself in.

You see someone is upset. There's obviously an issue going on. You're concerned and want to help. Once you get into the conversation ask...

· "What's the problem?" or "Tell me what's going on." or "Why do you think so-and-so is giving you trouble?" or "Why isn't this working?"

· I don't know.

· Well, if you DID know, what would it be?

· I just told you I don't know."

· Yes, I heard you, but if you DID know what might it be?

This doesn't always work, but it's golden when it does. The question tends to get to the root of the problem quickly. Try it, you may get great results!
