Hi All,

The Oregon Reference Summit invites you to join us Wednesday, August 6th from 12-1:30PM for a presentation entitled "Welcoming Communities: Immigration Resources and Legal Advocacy in Oregon Libraries."

Welcoming Communities: Immigration Resources and Legal Advocacy in Oregon Libraries
This presentation will provide a judgement free space to allow for learning about basic immigration terminology, updates under the current administration, Oregon sanctuary laws, Know Your Rights information, and resources on immigration for Oregon libraries. During the first hour immigration lawyers John A. Almaguer and John R. Almaguer will give their presentation and the last 30 minutes will be for Q&A. The session will be recorded.

Thank you to REFORMA Oregon for organizing this presentation for the 2025 Oregon Library Association conference last April! The Oregon Reference Summit is presenting this live, virtual version for those who were not able to attend the in-person session and those who would like updated information about changes to immigration policies and practices since the spring.

Presenter Bios
John Anthony Almaguer is the son of Mexican immigrants and practiced US Immigration and Naturalization law for over 25 years. John enjoys being able to see immigration, from the trenches and from the ivory tower. He presents on a variety of immigration related topics to attorneys, local law enforcement agencies, health and education professionals, and community organizations. By practicing and presenting immigration law John strives towards a holistic approach to his life's work and passion. In 2020, the Center for Nonprofit Legal Services awarded John the William V. Deatherage Pro Bono award recognizing him as a member of the Southern Oregon Bar whose work provides outstanding access to justice for residents of Jackson and Josephine Counties.

John Rafael Almaguer was born and raised in Southern Oregon. Since the age of 12, when he started assisting his father, an immigration attorney, John Rafael has been interested in the many aspects of immigration law. He has seen through his immigrant-family's experience the opportunities that life in the United States offers, and he is committed to helping others access similar opportunities.
Prior to joining Stout Law, John Rafael practiced in the Los Angeles office of the international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he worked in the firm's best-in-nation appellate and constitutional law and labor and employment practice groups. John Rafael graduated from the University of Chicago Law School.
