Wednesday April 23rd
Silos Are For Grain, Not People
Tech Services Outreach Services Collection Development
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Meeting Room 1E
Description
What do Outreach Services, Collection Development, and Technical Services all have in common, besides being departments (or even individual people/duties in some cases) in a library? Within each of those jobs are PEOPLE trying to ensure access to resources. But when we find ourselves in communication silos, access becomes harder, and collaboration dries up. Learn how communication and collaboration to update one of our outreach collections improved services for our patrons and un-siloed a few departments with seemingly little in common at Jackson County Library Services.

Book Mending for Modern Book Problems
Virtual - Pre-recorded Tech Services
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Meeting Room 4W
Description
How many heavy Lego books have you thrown out after 3 circulations? Some book problems look worse than they are. Learn about some fast fixes that can be done in as little as 3 minutes or 30 minutes.

Many modern books are made with glued spines instead of sewn and the covers are made with paper instead of cloth. These changes in bookbinding quality need new kinds of strengthening repairs to make them last. It is cheaper and more sustainable to repair than to replace because the replacements will have the same problems!

(These techniques are only meant for highly circulating books not expected to circulate for more than 15 years or so, and not meant for permanent or special collections.) Power Point with Show and Tell before and afters.

This session will explore the process of revitalizing a legacy juvenile collection at a large academic library, including the process of assessing campus interest and opinions, weeding outdated materials, prioritizing the integration of books that reflect authors and characters from a range of diverse backgrounds, and the curation of a children’s collection at a newly acquired branch campus. Whether managing legacy collections or starting fresh, this session will offer valuable takeaways for librarians working to create engaging and relevant children’s and YA collections in academic libraries.

Support Staff Division: The Megaphone for Library Staff
Staff Support [including Tech Services staff 😊]
3:15 PM – 4:15 PM
Meeting Room 4E
Description
Most career library staff don’t have a capital “L” Librarian or Director position. Ideas for how to innovate, increase efficiency and inspire can get lost in bureaucracy and classism.
Library leadership that routinely listen to a range of front line and back of the house staff make quality, equitable decisions with better outcomes. Staff report more job satisfaction, engagement and less turnover and burnout.
Come hear how you, or your reports, can leverage opportunities through Oregon Library Association Support Staff Division (OLA SSD) to network, exchange information with their counterparts in other libraries, develop skills that are not always available in their current role and create more value overall to their teams, libraries, and all Oregon Libraries.
