WORD/G-Docs - Quickly Convert Text to All Caps
Novice
When you're adding the finishing touches to your document, have you ever realized that changing a portion of the text to all uppercase letters can create a more polished look?
Using ALL CAPS in a document can serve several purposes, depending on context and intent. Here are some common reasons:
[A partial webpage displaying a description of Tech-Talk Database mentioning resources]
1. Emphasis & Urgency
· To highlight important information (e.g., warnings, critical instructions).
· Example: DO NOT TOUCH - HIGH VOLTAGE!
2. Highlight Singly Important Words
· Emphasize words you want the reader to note especially.
· Examples: "I told you NOT to open that." or "RIGHT click the word to..."
3. Titles & Headings
· To make section titles or headings stand out.
· Example: PROJECT OVERVIEW
4. Legal & Official Documents
· Used in contracts or legal text for clarity and emphasis.
· Example: THIS AGREEMENT IS LEGALLY BINDING.
5. Branding & Design Choice
· Some brands use all caps for logos, slogans, or marketing materials.
· Example: JUST DO IT.
Well, you don't need to re-type your text to change it to all caps, there's a quick way to convert it quickly it in both Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
WORD - Convert to ALL CAPS
Desktop:
Next time you want to change your text into uppercase letters, just:
[Microsoft Word toolbar screenshot highlighting text case change options with a dropdown menu]
· Highlight the text.
· On the Home tab, in the Font section, click on the drop-down arrow next to the icon with the Capital A and the Lower case a (Aa).
· Choose UPPERCASE from the drop-down menu.
All of the text will switch to capital letters.
NOTE: If you like keyboard shortcuts, pressing and holding Ctrl + Shift + A after you've highlighted the text will accomplish the same thing.
Microsoft 365 WEB Version:
[Formatting options for text in a document editor with arrows pointing to Change Case and UPPER CASE menu items]
· Highlight the text.
· Click the 3 horizontal dots to get to More Formatting Options.
· Choose Change Case from that menu.
· Then choose UPPERCASE.
BONUS! Use "Small Caps" for a Sophisticated Look in Word
[small caps]
If you want to achieve a more sophisticated look in a heading, and you want the message to communicate well, a clever way to achieve this is with the "Small Caps" formatting choice.
This font style is where the first letter is a larger capital letter and the rest of the word is in smaller capital letters. With this technique, the message comes through loud and clear and still looks snazzy.
To Use Small Caps:
· Highlight the text.
· On the Home tab in the Font section, click on the small drown down arrow in the bottom right of that section for the Font window to open.
· In the Effects section, check the box next to Small Caps, then OK.
NOTE: The Small caps option is not available in Google Docs.

Communications: Presenting Speak to the person in the back of the room!
When I was student teaching (a few years ago), I was given a piece of advice that has proven to be useful on many occasions. You might find it helpful as well.
It was Elementary School, a fourth grade. Roughly 30 kids in the class, with desks spread throughout the room. The supervising educator had experience with budding teachers as myself. She said the most important thing to remember, and do, when working with the class, was to speak loud enough for everyone to hear.
"There's a trick for that," she says. "Always speak to the person in the back of the room. Keep that in mind always, and you'll be heard by all ... and have their complete attention."
Project, project, project ... just by speaking to the person at the back of the room!
