WORD - Use Wrap Points with Images

Intermediate

[A hammock hangs from a palm tree on a sandy beach with clear blue water. White text explains a Word trick for wrapping text around images.]

Have you ever wanted a snazzier look for the images you use in documents? Adding spectacular visual elements can help the reader connect better with your message... so we use pictures often in all forms of communication.

Instead of positioning the images using a left or right justification, wouldn't it be cool to have the text flow around the picture seamlessly? Or, even be able to put text on top of an image?

You may have tried to create this effect by layering text boxes and using the space bar to inch the characters over manually, but that doesn't always give you the look you are trying to create.

Did you know there's a built-in way to get this effect? You can make your document look sophisticated by using the Edit Wrap Points tool when you are formatting the image. You can employ "wrap points" so that your text flows either INSIDE or OUTSIDE your image. For example, in the image above, because of wrap points, the text can actually flow on top of the image.

TIP: When an image has a transparent background, the text can wrap even more closely around the picture while using the preset settings. And it makes the Edit Wrap Points feature even more flexible and effective.

[Screenshot of the 'Wrap Text' menu in Microsoft Word with an arrow pointing to the highlighted option 'Edit Wrap Points.' Other text wrapping options are also visible in the dropdown list.]
Image Wrap Points

When you want the text to flow around an image in your document, use Wrap Points. By adjusting the controls, called nodes, you can customize how the text looks on one or all sides of the image.
1. Start by adding an image to your document. Click on it.
2. On the Pictures Tools Format tab, in the Arrange section, click the down arrow under Wrap text. Choose either Square or Tight.
3. Then go back to that same drop-down window and click the Edit Wrap Points option. NOTE: Edit Wrap Points will be grayed out if you don't first select either Square or Tight — it only works with these two options.
4. The lines around the image will turn red and the corners will turn into black boxes. These are the nodes to control how the text wraps.
5. Click on any of the nodes and drag left, right, up or down to customize how close you want the text to wrap around the image.

[A clock with the phrase TIME IS MONEY written around its face with TIME IS in gray and MONEY in red.]

· To refine the wrapping even more, add more nodes by clicking anywhere in the red lines to add a node and then drag the line to define the new definition of the image.

[A clock with the words TIME IS MONEY in red and curved around its face. The image is overlapped by text explaining how to wrap text around an image in Word.]

· When you're done, click outside the image area and the nodes will disappear.

TIP: If the nodes disappear, it means your image was "unclicked," so you need to start again to engage the Edit Wrap Points. Click on the image which will make the Picture Format tab appear. Click on it, find the Arrange section, then Wrap Text and Edit Wrap Points.

Using Word 365 Web

If you have the Desktop version of 365, you can Edit Wrap Points. The online version, however, is limited to the preset wrapping choice such as Tight (and In line with text, Square, Through, Top and Bottom, Behind Text, In Front of Text). There are no nodes for you to move around to create your own irregular shape.

What About GOOGLE Docs?

In Google Docs, the same is true. Only the preset choices let you control how the text wraps around an image. (Insert and click the image, choose the vertical ellipsis, select all image options, then Text wrapping.)

Communications: Listening

Repeat what you hear

Nothing says listening like hearing someone repeat something of what you said ... not as a question, but as a clarifying, validating statement.

Example:

Statement: "It takes time to write a book really well."

Listening Repeat: "It takes time."

You can see that just repeating a portion of what was said shows you got the point. You were listening!

Statement: "This project is very difficult for the team."

Listening Repeat: "It's difficult."

You use this "exact repeat" technique when the speaker has a lot to say and you want to periodically insert some words that tell them: "I'm still listening." "I get what you're saying."

You don't want to interrupt the flow of what is being said, but you do wish to indicate that you're listening intently and getting the key thoughts of what they are saying.
